What is a Generic Drug?

Description

Stelara (ustekinumab) is administered to adults via a subcutaneous injection for treating moderate to severe plaque psoriasis, active psoriatic arthritis, moderate to severe Crohn's disease, and moderate to severe ulcerative colitis. It is also administered to pediatric patients who are 6 years of age and older for treating moderate to severe plaque psoriasis and active psoriatic arthritis.

Stelara comes in 45 mg/0.5 mL or 90 mg/mL single-dose, prefilled syringes and 45 mg/0.5 mL single-dose vials.

Directions

Stelara should be administered as your doctor has instructed. Refer to the medication guide that comes with your prescription for further instructions for use, including proper storage.

Your Stelara dose and duration will be determined by your doctor. You or your caregiver should receive instructions on how to properly store, prepare, administer, and discard the medication. Stelara should be administered underneath the skin in the upper arms, thighs, buttocks, or abdomen.

Ingredients

Ustekinumab is the active ingredient in Stelara.

L-histidine, L-histidine monohydrochloride monohydrate, Polysorbate 80, and sucrose are the inactive ingredients in the single-dose, prefilled syringe.

Contraindications

Stelara should not be administered to patients who are allergic to any of its ingredients or excipients.

Cautions

  • Before Stelara treatment is initiated, inform your doctor of the following:
    • All the medications you take, including prescription and nonprescription medications, vitamins, and supplements
    • Your allergies
    • Any existing health concerns
    • Your past medical history
    • If you are pregnant or breastfeeding
  • Stelara medication contains the following warnings and precautions:
    • Infections that can become severe
    • Risk of certain infections may be increased
    • Evaluation for tuberculosis should be completed prior to initiating Stelara
    • Risk of malignancies may be increased
    • Anaphylaxis or other allergic reactions
    • Posterior reversible encephalopathy syndrome
    • Noninfectious pneumonia

Side Effects

Stelara side effects include but are not limited to fatigue, upper respiratory tract infection, vulvovaginal fungal infections, sinus infection, common cold, headache, vomiting, injection site reactions, bronchitis, itching, urinary tract infection, flu, diarrhea, stomach pain, nausea, and fever. Call your doctor right away if you have bothersome or persistent side effects.
