What is a Generic Drug?

A generic drug is a copy of the brand-name drug with the same dosage, safety, strength, quality, consumption method, performance, and intended use. Before generics become available on the market, the generic company must prove it has the same active ingredients as the brand-name drug and works in the same way and in the same amount of time in the body.

Description

Supartz (sodium hyaluronate) is an injectable medication that is administered intra-articularly for treating pain related to knee osteoarthritis in patients who did not respond adequately to conservative, non-drug treatments and simple pain relievers such as acetaminophen.

Directions

A qualified healthcare provider will administer Supartz via an intra-articular injection once a week–following strict aseptic techniques–for a total of 5 injections.

Patients are advised to refrain from engaging in strenuous or prolonged weight-bearing activities for 48 hours following their Supartz injection.

Ingredients

Sodium hyaluronate is the active ingredient in Supartz.

Contraindications

Patients who have an allergy to any of the ingredients in Supartz or patients who have infections or skin diseases in the injectable areas should not receive Supartz.

Cautions

  • Before beginning treatment with Supartz, discuss the following with your doctor:
    • All the prescription and nonprescription medications you take
    • Your allergies
    • Your current health issues
    • Your past medical history
    • Your pregnancy or breastfeeding status
  • Supartz is associated with the following warnings and precautions:
    • Using quaternary ammonium salt-containing disinfectants for skin preparation with Supartz can result in precipitation of sodium hyaluronate; therefore, they should not be used together.
    • The effectiveness of a single treatment cycle of fewer than 5 injections is not established.
    • The safety and efficacy of injecting Supartz in joints other than the knee is not established.
    • The safety and efficacy of using Supartz injection with other intra-articular injectables is not established.
    • Caution should be exercised when administering Supartz to patients who are allergic to avian proteins, feathers, and products that contain eggs.

Side Effects

Supartz side effects include but are not limited to reactions at the injection site; pain at the injection site; pain in the joints; pain of the back; non-specific pain; headache; and issues of the joints.

Immediately inform your doctor if you develop bothersome or persistent side effects.
