What is a Generic Drug?

Supartz FX (sodium hyaluronate) is a medication that is injected into the knee in order to treat pain from knee osteoarthritis in patients who did not adequately respond to conservative, non-drug therapy and simple pain relievers (e.g., acetaminophen).

Routes of administration

Intra-articular injection

Directions

Following strict aseptic techniques, Supartz FX is administered via an intra-articular injection by a qualified healthcare provider one time a week for 5 weeks (5 total injections). Some patients may benefit from three injections per week.

Strenuous or prolonged weight-bearing activities should be avoided for 48 hours following Supartz FX injection.

Contraindications

Patients with an allergy to any of the ingredients in Supartz FX or patients who have infections or skin diseases near the injection site should not receive Supartz FX injections.

  • Before you start treatment with Supartz FX, inform your doctor of:
    • All the prescription and nonprescription medications you take
    • Your allergies
    • Your current health issues
    • Your past medical history
    • Your status of pregnancy or breastfeeding
  • Supartz FX is associated with the following warnings and precautions:
    • Using quaternary ammonium salt-containing disinfectants for skin preparation with Supartz FX can result in precipitation of sodium hyaluronate; therefore, they should not be used together.
    • The effectiveness of a single treatment cycle of fewer than 3 injections has not been established.
    • The safety and effectiveness of injecting Supartz FX in other joints besides the knee have not been established.
    • The safety and effectiveness of using Supartz FX with other intra-articular injectables have not been established.
    • Caution should be used when administering Supartz FX to patients who are allergic to avian proteins, feathers, and products that contain eggs.

Side Effects

Supartz FX side effects include but are not limited to joint pain, joint problems, back pain, nonspecific pain, injection site reactions, headache, and injection site pain.;

Immediately tell your doctor if you develop bothersome or persistent side effects.
