What is a Generic Drug?

A generic drug is a copy of the brand-name drug with the same dosage, safety, strength, quality, consumption method, performance, and intended use. Before generics become available on the market, the generic company must prove it has the same active ingredients as the brand-name drug and works in the same way and in the same amount of time in the body.

The only differences between generics and their brand-name counterparts is that generics are less expensive and may look slightly different (eg. different shape or color), as trademarks laws prevent a generic from looking exactly like the brand-name drug.

Generics are less expensive because generic manufacturers don't have to invest large sums of money to develop a drug. When the brand-name patent expires, generic companies can manufacture a copy of the brand-name and sell it at a substantial discount.

Description

Ansaid (flurbiprofen) is a prescription nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID) for the treatment of:

  • Rheumatoid arthritis
  • Osteoarthritis

Some doctors may also prescribe Ansaid (flurbiprofen) for an unapproved (off-label) use by federal public health agencies like the U.S. Food and Drug Administration.

Ansaid (flurbiprofen) comes in 50 mg and 100 mg tablets for oral administration.

The brand product has been discontinued in the US, but generic options may be available.

Directions

Ansaid (flurbiprofen) should be taken as your doctor has directed. Your doctor will determine an appropriate Ansaid (flurbiprofen) dosage for you.

For further usage instructions, carefully read the medication guide that accompanies your Ansaid (flurbiprofen) prescription.

Any questions or concerns may be referred to your doctor or pharmacist.

Ingredients

Flurbiprofen is the active ingredient in Ansaid.

Contraindications

Systemic flurbiprofen should not be given to patients for pain when undergoing a coronary artery bypass graft (CABG) surgery, as the risk for heart attack and stroke is increased.

Cautions

  • Ansaid (flurbiprofen) is associated with the following Boxed Warning:
    • Using flurbiprofen long-term can result in gastritis, ulceration with or without gastrointestinal (GI) perforation, and/or GI bleeding, which can occur at any time, often without prior symptoms. Flurbiprofen should be avoided in patients who have had or currently have a GI disease such as peptic ulcer disease, ulcerative colitis, or GI bleeding. Patients who have had peptic ulcer disease or GI bleeding and take NSAIDs have more than a 10-fold increased risk for developing a GI bleed than those with neither risk factor. Patients who are receiving chemotherapy that suppresses the bone marrow, corticosteroids, anticoagulants, or who smoke, are elderly, or struggle with alcoholism are at increased risk for GI bleeding due to NSAID use. All patients receiving long-term treatment with NSAIDs should be regularly monitored. Alternative treatments should be considered.
    • Like all NSAIDs, systemic use of flurbiprofen may worsen or cause high blood pressure and may worsen congestive heart failure and may cause an increased risk of serious cardiovascular thrombotic events, heart attack, and stroke; these can be fatal. The risk for heart attack or stroke can occur as early as the first weeks of taking an NSAID and may increase with higher doses or prolonged usage duration. The risk for heart failure is also increased with the use of NSAIDs. Patients should seek medical care immediately if they develop any signs or symptoms of a cardiovascular event.
    • Systemic flurbiprofen should not be given to patients for pain when undergoing a CABG, as the risk for heart attack and stroke is increased.
  • Before you start taking Ansaid (flurbiprofen), discuss the following with your doctor:
    • All the prescription and nonprescription medications you take
    • Your allergies
    • Your current health conditions
    • Your past medical history
    • Your status of pregnancy or breastfeeding

Side Effects

Ansaid (flurbiprofen) side effects may include but are not limited to peptic ulcers, GI perforation, GI bleeding, nausea/vomiting, diarrhea, gas, indigestion, constipation, abdominal pain, and gastritis.

Immediately contact your doctor if you experience bothersome or persistent side effects.

Talk to your doctor about whether Ansaid (flurbiprofen) may be an option for you.
