What is a Generic Drug?

A generic drug is a copy of the brand-name drug with the same dosage, safety, strength, quality, consumption method, performance, and intended use. Before generics become available on the market, the generic company must prove it has the same active ingredients as the brand-name drug and works in the same way and in the same amount of time in the body.

The only differences between generics and their brand-name counterparts is that generics are less expensive and may look slightly different (eg. different shape or color), as trademarks laws prevent a generic from looking exactly like the brand-name drug.

Generics are less expensive because generic manufacturers don't have to invest large sums of money to develop a drug. When the brand-name patent expires, generic companies can manufacture a copy of the brand-name and sell it at a substantial discount.

Description

Tenoretic (atenolol and chlorthalidone) is an oral prescription medication for treating high blood pressure.

Tenoretic comes in the following tablets for oral administration:

  • Atenolol 50 mg, chlorthalidone 25 mg
  • Atenolol 100 mg, chlorthalidone 25 mg

Directions

Tenoretic should be taken as directed by your doctor. Your doctor will tell you how much medication you should take. Typically, one tablet is taken orally one time a day.

Tenoretic tablets should be kept at temperatures between 20°C and 25°C (68°F and 77°F); store away from children’s reach.

Be sure to read the medication guide that comes with your prescription for additional instructions for use.

If you have any questions or concerns, contact your doctor or pharmacist.

Ingredients

Atenolol and chlorthalidone are the active ingredients in Tenoretic.

Magnesium stearate, microcrystalline cellulose, povidone, and sodium starch glycolate are the inactive ingredients.

Contraindications

Patients with any of the following conditions should not take Tenoretic:

  • Heart rate that is slower than normal
  • Heart block greater than first degree
  • Cardiogenic shock
  • Heart failure
  • Decreased urine output
  • Allergy to medications derived from sulfonamides or to any of Tenoretic’s ingredients

Cautions

  • Before you start taking Tenoretic for high blood pressure, inform your doctor of:
    • All the prescription and nonprescription medications you take
    • Your allergies
    • Your current health issues
    • Your past medical history
    • Your pregnancy or breastfeeding status
  • Tenoretic is associated with the following warnings and precautions:
    • Generally, patients with bronchospastic disease should not use beta blockers. Tenoretic has beta1-selectivity, so it should be used carefully in patients with bronchospastic disease and did not adequately respond to or are unable to tolerate other high blood pressure treatments. The lowest effective dose of Tenoretic should be given and a bronchodilator should be accessible. If a dosage increase is needed, the dose may be divided for lower peak blood levels.
    • Heart failure
    • Kidney and liver issues
    • Abnormal levels of electrolytes and fluid imbalance
    • Ischemic heart disease with sudden discontinuation of Tenoretic
    • Decreased heart rate and heart block when Tenoretic is taken with calcium channel blockers (e.g., verapamil or diltiazem)
    • Beta-blocking medications, such as Tenoretic, should not be routinely discontinued prior to major surgery. However, the risks of general anesthesia and surgery may be increased due to the heart’s impaired ability to respond to reflex adrenergic stimuli.
    • The rapid heart rate that can happen with low blood sugar levels may be masked by beta-blocking medications such as Tenoretic. Therefore, caution should be exercised in patients with diabetes.
    • Tenoretic should not be administered to patients who have untreated pheochromocytoma.
    • Harm to an unborn baby can occur; caution should be exercised during breastfeeding or pregnancy.
    • Peripheral arterial circulatory disorders may be aggravated.

Side Effects

Tenoretic side effects include but are not limited to heart rate that is slower than normal, low blood pressure, dizziness, vertigo, fatigue, nausea, and diarrhea. Immediately tell your doctor if you experience bothersome or persistent side effects.
