What is a Generic Drug?

A generic drug is a copy of the brand-name drug with the same dosage, safety, strength, quality, consumption method, performance, and intended use. Before generics become available on the market, the generic company must prove it has the same active ingredients as the brand-name drug and works in the same way and in the same amount of time in the body.

The only differences between generics and their brand-name counterparts is that generics are less expensive and may look slightly different (eg. different shape or color), as trademarks laws prevent a generic from looking exactly like the brand-name drug.

Generics are less expensive because generic manufacturers don't have to invest large sums of money to develop a drug. When the brand-name patent expires, generic companies can manufacture a copy of the brand-name and sell it at a substantial discount.

Description

Tenormin, known generically as Atenolol, is a medication that belongs to a drug category called beta blockers. It's used to manage high blood pressure and prevent chest pain (angina). By slowing down the heart rate and relaxing blood vessels, Atenolol improves blood flow and lowers blood pressure. It's also used in managing heart attacks and reducing the frequency and severity of angina attacks.

Directions

The standard Tenormin dosage varies depending on the condition being treated. However, for high blood pressure and angina, patients often start with 50 mg once a day. This dosage may be increased if necessary up to 100 or 200 mg per day to achieve the desired treatment response. It's important to take the medication at the same time every day and follow a healthcare provider’s instructions. If you miss a dose, take it as soon as you remember, but skip it if it's almost time for your next dose. Always consult with your healthcare provider before making any changes to how you take Tenormin.

Ingredients

The active ingredient in Tenormin is Atenolol.

Contraindications

Avoid taking or using this medication if any of the following apply:

  • Known hypersensitivity to Atenolol or any ingredients in the formulation
  • Sinus bradycardia, which means your resting heart rate is slower than normal
  • Second or third-degree heart block without a pacemaker in place
  • Cardiogenic shock, a condition where your heart can't pump enough blood to meet your body's needs
  • Cardiac failure

Cautions

  • Before starting treatment with Tenormin, make sure to tell your healthcare provider if you have:
    • Any existing health conditions
    • Any allergies
    • A list of all medications you are currently taking
    • Whether you are pregnant or breastfeeding
  • Tenormin may worsen heart failure or slow your heartbeat. If you notice symptoms like extreme tiredness, shortness of breath, or swelling in your legs, contact your doctor immediately. If you have a history of heart issues, your doctor will closely monitor your condition.
  • Stopping Tenormin suddenly can cause severe chest pain, irregular heartbeats, or even a heart attack. Always talk to your doctor before discontinuing this medication, and follow their plan for tapering off gradually.
  • Tenormin should be used with caution in patients with breathing problems like mild asthma or chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). Your doctor may recommend starting at the lowest dose and closely monitor your symptoms.
  • Let your surgeon know you are taking Tenormin before any major surgery. This medication can affect how your heart responds to anesthesia and increase the risk of low blood pressure during surgery.
  • Tenormin may hide the symptoms of low blood sugar, such as a rapid heartbeat. If you have diabetes, monitor your blood sugar levels carefully, especially during fasting, illness, or changes in your diet.
  • Tenormin can mask signs of an overactive thyroid, such as a fast heartbeat. Stopping this medication suddenly can cause a dangerous condition called a thyroid storm. Speak to your doctor if you are being treated for thyroid problems.
  • Tenormin can affect a baby during pregnancy and breastfeeding, causing low birth weight, slow heartbeat, or low blood sugar. If you are pregnant, breastfeeding, or planning to become pregnant, talk to your doctor to determine the best course of action.
  • Certain medications, including calcium channel blockers, can interact with Tenormin and increase the risk of side effects. Always tell your doctor about all medications, vitamins, or supplements you are taking.
  • Tenormin may cause dizziness or fatigue, especially when starting or increasing your dose. Avoid driving or operating machinery until you know how the medication affects you.

Side Effects

In clinical studies, the most common side effects of Tenormin were tiredness, dizziness, and bradycardia (slow heart rate), which occurred in up to 26%, 13%, and 3% of patients, respectively. Other common side effects included cold extremities, fatigue, and nausea. Most side effects were mild and transient, often resolving with continued use or dosage changes.

Serious side effects include severe bradycardia, low blood pressure, and heart block, particularly in people with preexisting heart conditions. In rare cases, Tenormin has been associated with depression, hallucinations, or Raynaud’s phenomenon. Postmarketing reports also include liver enzyme elevations, low platelet counts, and reversible hair loss. Tell your healthcare provider immediately if you experience symptoms like severe dizziness, fainting, or difficulty breathing.
