What is a Generic Drug?

A generic drug is a copy of the brand-name drug with the same dosage, safety, strength, quality, consumption method, performance, and intended use. Before generics become available on the market, the generic company must prove it has the same active ingredients as the brand-name drug and works in the same way and in the same amount of time in the body.

Description

Sumycin (tetracycline) is an antibiotic used to treat several different types of bacterial infections, including bronchitis, urinary tract infections, acne, gonorrhea, chlamydia, and more.

Sumycin (tetracycline) is available in 250 mg and 500 mg tablets for oral administration.

The brand product has been discontinued in the US, but generic options may be available.

Ingredients

Tetracycline is the active ingredient in Sumycin.

Colorants (D&C Red No. 30 Aluminum lake, titanium dioxide), hypromellose, anhydrous lactose, magnesium stearate, microcrystalline cellulose, povidone, pregelatinized starch, and stearic acid are inactive ingredients included. The 250 mg tablets also contain methylene chloride hydroxypropyl cellulose and triacetin. The 500 mg tablets also contain polyethylene glycol, polyparaben, methylparaben, sodium citrate, potassium sorbate, propylparaben, and xanthan gum.

Contraindications

Do not take Sumycin (tetracycline) if you are allergic to other tetracycline medications, have severe liver impairment, or if you are pregnant (especially if you are in your 2nd or 3rd trimester; consult with your doctor).

Cautions

  • Before you begin treatment with Sumycin (tetracycline), discuss the following with your doctor:

    • Your allergies
    • Your current health conditions
    • Your past medical history
    • Your pregnancy or breastfeeding status
  • Tetracyclines can cause harm to an unborn baby.
  • Tetracyclines may cause permanent teeth discoloration if taken during tooth development (last half of pregnancy, infancy, and childhood to 8 years of age).
  • Prolonged sun or tanning equipment exposure while taking Sumycin (tetracycline) can result in photosensitivity.
  • An increase in BUN can occur.
  • High levels of tetracycline in the body in patients with impaired kidney function may result in azotemia, too much phosphate in the blood, and acidosis.
  • Outdated tetracyclines can cause Fanconi-like syndrome.
  • Tetracyclines have been known to cause intracranial hypertension, which usually goes away after stopping treatment; however, there may be permanent vision loss. Immediately seek ophthalmologic evaluation if you experience vision problems during treatment with Sumycin (tetracycline).
  • Tetracyclines form a stable calcium complex in bone-forming tissues, and decreased fibula growth rate has been observed in premature infants.

Side Effects

Sumycin (tetracycline) side effects may include but are not limited to nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, stomach upset, white patches or sores in the mouth or on the lips, appetite loss, anorexia, epigastric distress, swollen tongue, black hairy tongue, sore throat, difficulty swallowing, headache, dizziness, sores or swelling in the rectal or genital area, vaginal discharge or itching, permanent teeth discoloration, rashes, liver problems, increased BUN, allergic reactions, blood disorders, and abnormal blood cell counts.

Immediately call your doctor if you experience bothersome or persistent side effects while taking Sumycin (tetracycline).
