What is a Generic Drug?

A generic drug is a copy of the brand-name drug with the same dosage, safety, strength, quality, consumption method, performance, and intended use. Before generics become available on the market, the generic company must prove it has the same active ingredients as the brand-name drug and works in the same way and in the same amount of time in the body.

The only differences between generics and their brand-name counterparts is that generics are less expensive and may look slightly different (eg. different shape or color), as trademarks laws prevent a generic from looking exactly like the brand-name drug.

Generics are less expensive because generic manufacturers don't have to invest large sums of money to develop a drug. When the brand-name patent expires, generic companies can manufacture a copy of the brand-name and sell it at a substantial discount.

Directions

Tiazac should be taken exactly as prescribed by a healthcare provider. Generally, patients take this medication by mouth, with or without food, at the same time each day. It is crucial not to crush or chew the capsules, as doing so can release the entire dose at once, increasing the risk of side effects. If swallowing capsules is challenging, patients may carefully open the capsule and sprinkle its contents on a spoonful of applesauce. This mixture should be swallowed immediately without chewing, followed by a glass of water.

Ingredients

The active ingredient in Tiazac is Diltiazem HCl.

Contraindications

Avoid taking or using this medication if any of the following apply:

  • Sick sinus syndrome unless there is a functioning ventricular pacemaker
  • Second- or third-degree AV block unless a functioning ventricular pacemaker is present
  • Severe low blood pressure
  • Hypersensitivity or a known allergic reaction to Diltiazem
  • Acute myocardial infarction with pulmonary congestion

Cautions

  • Before starting treatment with the Tiazac, tell your healthcare provider about the following:
    • Any existing health conditions
    • Any allergies
    • A list of all medications you are currently taking
    • Whether you are pregnant or breastfeeding
  • Tiazac can slow heart rate and affect heart conduction, which may lead to serious heart rhythm problems in some patients, especially those with existing conduction disorders. If you take beta-blockers or digitalis, your doctor may need to monitor your heart closely.
  • While Tiazac is generally safe for most people, it may worsen heart failure in those with weakened heart function. If you have heart failure or take beta-blockers, your doctor will carefully assess whether this medication is right for you.
  • Tiazac may cause a drop in blood pressure, leading to dizziness, lightheadedness, or fainting. If you experience these symptoms, contact your doctor.
  • Because Tiazac is processed by the liver and excreted by the kidneys, regular tests may be needed if you have kidney or liver disease.
  • Tiazac can interact with many other medications, including beta-blockers, digoxin, benzodiazepines, and statins, potentially increasing their effects. Your doctor may need to adjust your dosages if you take these medications.
  • If you need surgery, tell your doctor that you are taking Tiazac, as it may increase the effects of anesthesia and affect heart function.
  • Animal studies suggest that Tiazac may harm a developing fetus. If you are pregnant or planning to become pregnant, discuss alternative treatments with your doctor.
  • Tiazac is found in breast milk. If you are breastfeeding, your doctor may recommend switching to a different medication or an alternative feeding method for your baby.
  • The safety and effectiveness of Tiazac in children have not been established.
  • Older adults may be more sensitive to the effects of Tiazac due to age-related declines in kidney, liver, or heart function. A lower starting dose may be necessary.

Side Effects

The most common side effects of Tiazac include headache, dizziness, and swelling in the lower legs (peripheral edema). Some people may also experience indigestion, nasal congestion, or flu-like symptoms. Gastrointestinal discomfort, such as nausea or diarrhea, has been reported in some cases. These side effects are generally mild and tend to improve with continued use.

Tiazac may cause serious heart-related side effects, such as abnormal heart rhythms, low blood pressure, or heart block. Rare cases of liver injury, severe skin reactions like Stevens-Johnson syndrome, and blood disorders have been reported. Some patients may also experience mood changes, hallucinations, or nerve-related symptoms like tingling or tremors. If you develop chest pain, difficulty breathing, severe dizziness, or a skin rash, seek medical attention immediately.
