What is a Generic Drug?

A generic drug is a copy of the brand-name drug with the same dosage, safety, strength, quality, consumption method, performance, and intended use. Before generics become available on the market, the generic company must prove it has the same active ingredients as the brand-name drug and works in the same way and in the same amount of time in the body.

The only differences between generics and their brand-name counterparts is that generics are less expensive and may look slightly different (eg. different shape or color), as trademarks laws prevent a generic from looking exactly like the brand-name drug.

Description

Tibsovo (ivosidenib) is a prescription medication used for treating the following:

  • Newly diagnosed, relapsed, or refractory acute myeloid leukemia
  • Relapsed or refractory myelodysplastic syndromes
  • Advanced or metastatic cholangiocarcinoma

Tibsovo is available in 250 mg oral tablets.

Directions

Tibsovo should be taken as your doctor has instructed.

Recommended dosage: 500 mg by mouth one time a day. While Tibsovo may be taken with or without food, you should avoid taking it with a high-fat meal.

Tibsovo tablets should be stored between 20°C and 25°C (68°F and 77°F) and out of children’s reach.

Ingredients

Ivosidenib is the active ingredient in Tibsovo.

Colloidal silicon dioxide, croscarmellose sodium, hypromellose acetate succinate, magnesium stearate, microcrystalline cellulose, and sodium lauryl sulfate are the inactive ingredients. FD&C blue #2, hypromellose, lactose monohydrate, titanium dioxide, and triacetin also make up the tablet coating.

Contraindications

There are no contraindications per the most recent Tibosovo Prescribing Information.

Cautions

  • Tibsovo is associated with the following FDA Boxed Warning:
    • Patients taking Tibsovo have experienced differentiation syndrome symptoms, which can be fatal. If differentiation syndrome is suspected, patients should receive corticosteroid therapy and hemodynamic monitoring until symptoms have resolved.
  • Before you start taking Tibsovo, inform your doctor of:
    • All the prescription and nonprescription medications you take
    • Your allergies
    • Your current health issues
    • Your past medical history
    • Your status of pregnancy or breastfeeding
  • Tibsovo is associated with the following warnings and precautions:
    • Prolongation of the QTc interval
    • Guillain-Barre´ Syndrome

Side Effects

Abnormal blood cell counts, abnormal electrolytes, diarrhea, fatigue, nausea, vomiting, decreased appetite, swelling, increased liver enzymes, abdominal pain, joint pain, shortness of breath, increased uric acid, rash, mucositis, QT prolongation, differentiation syndrome, and muscle pain are the most common Tibsovo side effects in patients with acute myeloid leukemia.

Abnormal labs, pain in the joints, fatigue, diarrhea, cough, mucositis, decreased appetite, muscle pain, itching, and rash are the most common Tibsovo side effects in patients with relapsed or refractory myelodysplastic syndrome.

Abnormal labs, fatigue, nausea, abdominal pain, diarrhea, cough, decreased appetite, fluid retention, vomiting, anemia, and rash are the most common Tibsovo side effects in patients with cholangiocarcinoma.

However, patients may experience other side effects. Immediately contact your doctor if you experience side effects that bother you or persist.
