What is a Generic Drug?

A generic drug is a copy of the brand-name drug with the same dosage, safety, strength, quality, consumption method, performance, and intended use. Before generics become available on the market, the generic company must prove it has the same active ingredients as the brand-name drug and works in the same way and in the same amount of time in the body.

The only differences between generics and their brand-name counterparts is that generics are less expensive and may look slightly different (eg. different shape or color), as trademarks laws prevent a generic from looking exactly like the brand-name drug.

Generics are less expensive because generic manufacturers don't have to invest large sums of money to develop a drug. When the brand-name patent expires, generic companies can manufacture a copy of the brand-name and sell it at a substantial discount.

Description

Tobradex is a combination medication containing Tobramycin and Dexamethasone. Tobramycin, an antibiotic, fights bacterial infections in the eye, while dexamethasone, a corticosteroid, helps reduce inflammation. This medication comes as eye drops or an ointment. It is intended for topical ophthalmic use to help assist in preventing permanent damage caused by certain eye problems.

Directions

Tobradex is a medication that is applied directly to the eyes. The usual dosage of the Tobradex ophthalmic suspension is one or two drops in the affected eye every four to six hours. Before using the suspension, it’s important to shake it well.

When using the Tobradex eye ointment, a small ribbon about half an inch long should be applied to the affected eye, typically three to four times a day. It’s important to follow a doctor’s instructions carefully. To avoid contamination, do not touch the tip of the dropper or tube to any surface. In addition, contact lenses should not be worn while applying Tobradex.

Ingredients

The active ingredients in Tobradex are Tobramycin and Dexamethasone.

Contraindications

Avoid taking or using this medication if any of the following apply:

  • Known hypersensitivity to Tobramycin or Dexamethasone
  • Viral infections of the eye, such as herpes simplex
  • Mycobacterial or fungal eye infections

Cautions

  • Before using Tobradex, make sure to let your healthcare provider know if you have:
    • Any existing health issues
    • Any allergies
    • All medications you're currently taking
    • Whether you are pregnant or breastfeeding
  • Long-term use of Tobradex may cause infections from fungi that aren’t killed by the medication. If the eye gets worse or seems infected, contact a doctor. Doctors may need to examine the eyes with special tools, especially if the treatment is extended or if multiple prescriptions are needed.
  • Tobradex can slow down healing of the eye’s surface. People with eye injuries should only use this medication as directed by their doctor.
  • Some people may be allergic to Tobradex, especially if they are sensitive to other antibiotics in the same group. If an allergic reaction occurs, stop using it and speak to a doctor right away.
  • Avoid wearing contact lenses while using Tobradex, especially if you have an eye infection.
  • To keep the medicine clean, the tip of the tube should not touch the eye or anything else.
  • If the package’s seals are broken or missing, the medication should not be used.
  • Pregnant women should only use Tobradex if the doctor decides the benefits outweigh the risks to the baby. Long-term use of similar medications during pregnancy could slow the baby’s growth. Babies exposed to large amounts of this medication before birth may need extra care after birth.
  • Breastfeeding women should be cautious when using Tobradex, as small amounts of the medicine might pass into breast milk and affect the baby’s growth or natural hormone levels.

Side Effects

Tobradex may cause mild side effects, such as eye redness, itching, or swelling of the eyelids. Some people experience localized irritation like conjunctival redness or discomfort. These reactions, often linked to the Tobramycin ingredient, are generally temporary and occur in less than 4% of patients. If symptoms persist or worsen, consult a healthcare provider.

Tobradex can cause serious side effects, including increased eye pressure, which may lead to glaucoma or optic nerve damage. Long-term use may result in cataract formation or delayed wound healing. Secondary infections, including fungal or bacterial infections, can develop with extended use. Rarely, systemic effects like adrenal suppression or Cushing’s syndrome may occur with excessive dexamethasone use. Stop using Tobradex and seek immediate medical attention if you notice symptoms such as severe eye pain, vision changes, or unusual swelling.
