What is a Generic Drug?

A generic drug is a copy of the brand-name drug with the same dosage, safety, strength, quality, consumption method, performance, and intended use. Before generics become available on the market, the generic company must prove it has the same active ingredients as the brand-name drug and works in the same way and in the same amount of time in the body.

The only differences between generics and their brand-name counterparts is that generics are less expensive and may look slightly different (eg. different shape or color), as trademarks laws prevent a generic from looking exactly like the brand-name drug.

Generics are less expensive because generic manufacturers don't have to invest large sums of money to develop a drug. When the brand-name patent expires, generic companies can manufacture a copy of the brand-name and sell it at a substantial discount.

Description

Topicort (Desoximetasone) is a corticosteroid that comes in various forms including gels, creams, and ointments. It helps relieve skin inflammation by reducing redness, itching, and swelling. As an anti-inflammatory agent, Topicort can help manage various skin conditions, such as eczema and psoriasis.

Directions

Topicort comes as a gel, cream, or ointment and is used on the skin where it is needed. To use it, apply a thin layer to clean, dry skin, usually two times a day, unless your doctor tells you differently.

It’s important to keep the medication away from your eyes, mouth, and any open cuts. After applying it, wash your hands to avoid spreading the medicine to other areas. Do not cover the treated area with a bandage or wrap unless your doctor says it's okay, as this can increase the absorption of the medication.

Ingredients

The active ingredient in Topicort is Desoximetasone.

Contraindications

Avoid taking or using this medication if any of the following apply:

  • Hypersensitivity to Desoximetasone or any of its components
  • Presence of untreated bacterial, fungal, or viral skin infections

Cautions

  • Before starting treatment with Topicort (Desoximetasone), be sure to inform your healthcare provider about the following:
    • Any medical conditions you currently have
    • Any allergies
    • All medications you are currently taking
    • Whether you are pregnant or breastfeeding
  • Topical corticosteroids like Topicort may be absorbed into the bloodstream, potentially causing reversible suppression of the HPA axis, Cushing's syndrome, or hyperglycemia. Use cautiously on large areas, damaged skin, or with prolonged treatment.
  • Children may be more susceptible to side effects, including growth retardation or adrenal suppression. Use the lowest effective dose for the shortest duration.
  • Use during pregnancy only if the potential benefits outweigh the risks. Caution is advised for nursing mothers as systemic absorption may pass into breast milk.
  • Apply as directed by your doctor. Avoid contact with eyes, mouth, and mucous membranes. Do not bandage or occlude treated areas unless instructed.
  • Avoid using with other corticosteroid-containing products or irritant medications unless approved by your doctor.
  • Periodically evaluate for signs of HPA axis suppression or adverse effects, especially if using for extended periods or on sensitive areas.
  • Discontinue use if severe irritation, blistering, or swelling occurs, and consult a doctor if there’s no improvement within four weeks.
  • Treat any skin infections before using Topicort and discontinue if the infection persists.

Side Effects

Topicort may cause mild local side effects, such as burning, itching, or irritation at the application site. Other common reactions include dryness, folliculitis (inflammation of hair follicles), and redness. These effects are typically mild and resolve as your skin adjusts to the medication. If discomfort persists, consult your healthcare provider.

Serious side effects of Topicort are rare but may include skin thinning, discoloration, or signs of allergic reactions like increased redness, swelling, or rash. Prolonged use or application under occlusive dressings may increase the risk of secondary infections or more severe skin reactions, such as striae (stretch marks) or skin atrophy. If you experience any unusual or worsening symptoms, stop using Topicort and contact your healthcare provider promptly.
