What is a Generic Drug?

Description

Trileptal (oxcarbazepine) is an oral medication prescribed to treat:

  • Partial-onset seizures in adults as monotherapy or adjunctive therapy
  • Partial-onset seizures in pediatric patients between 4 and 16 years of age as monotherapy
  • Partial-onset seizures in pediatric patients between 2 and 16 years of age as adjunctive therapy

Trileptal is available in the following formulations and strengths:

Directions

Trileptal should be taken as prescribed. Your doctor will determine an appropriate Trileptal dosage and treatment regimen for you depending on your age, weight, and how well you tolerate the medication.

Store Trileptal tablets and oral suspension between 20°C and 25°C (68°F to 77°F). Use the oral suspension within 7 weeks of opening.

Ingredients

Oxcarbazepine is the active ingredient in Trileptal.

Colloidal silicon dioxide, crospovidone, hydroxypropyl methylcellulose, iron oxide, magnesium stearate, microcrystalline cellulose, polyethylene glycol, talc, and titanium dioxide are the inactive ingredients in the tablets.

Ascorbic acid; dispersible cellulose; ethanol; macrogol stearate; methyl parahydroxybenzoate; propylene glycol; propyl parahydroxybenzoate; purified water; sodium saccharin; sorbic acid; sorbitol; and yellow-plum-lemon aroma are the inactive ingredients in the oral suspension.

Contraindications

Do not take Trileptal if you are allergic to any of its ingredients or to eslicarbazepine acetate.

Cautions

  • Before you begin treatment with Trileptal, tell your doctor about:
    • All the medications you take, including prescription and nonprescription medications
    • Your allergies
    • Your current health conditions
    • Your past medical history
    • Your pregnancy or breastfeeding status
  • Trileptal is associated with the following warnings and precautions:
    • Low blood sodium levels
    • Cross hypersensitivity reaction to carbamazepine
    • Dermatological reactions that are serious
    • Suicidal ideation and behavior
    • Trileptal should be gradually withdrawn.
    • Cognitive or neuropsychiatric adverse reactions, including cognitive dysfunction, drowsiness, and problems with coordination, may occur. Caution should be used when driving, operating machinery, or participating in other potentially hazardous activities.
    • Drug reaction with eosinophilia and systemic symptoms/multiorgan hypersensitivity
    • Hematologic events
    • The active metabolite levels of oxcarbazepine may gradually decrease during pregnancy, affecting seizure control.
    • Worsening/aggravation or new onset of primary generalized seizures may occur.

Side Effects

Side effects of Trileptal may include but are not limited to dizziness, drowsiness, double vision, fatigue, nausea, vomiting, coordination problems, abnormal vision, headache, involuntary eye movements, tremor, and abnormal gait.
