What is a Generic Drug?

A generic drug is a copy of the brand-name drug with the same dosage, safety, strength, quality, consumption method, performance, and intended use. Before generics become available on the market, the generic company must prove it has the same active ingredients as the brand-name drug and works in the same way and in the same amount of time in the body.

Description

Trilipix (fenofibric acid) is a medication used with diet to reduce triglyceride levels in patients with severely high triglycerides. It is also used to reduce elevated LDL “bad” cholesterol, total cholesterol, triglycerides, and apo B, and increase HDL “good” cholesterol in patients with primary hypercholesterolemia or mixed dyslipidemia.

Trilipix comes in 45 mg and 135 mg delayed release capsules for oral administration.

Directions

Take Trilipix exactly as prescribed by your doctor.

Dosage for high triglycerides: 45 mg to 135 mg by mouth one time a day with or without food

Dosage for primary hypercholesterolemia or mixed dyslipidemia: 135 mg by mouth one time a day with or without food

The maximum daily dose is 135 mg. Patients with kidney dysfunction may require a smaller dose.

Ingredients

Fenofibric acid is the active ingredient in Trilipix.

Contraindications

Patients with any of the following should not take Trilipix:

  • Severe kidney impairment, including patients on dialysis
  • Active liver disease
  • Gallbladder disease
  • Allergy to fenofibric acid or fenofibrate

Mothers who are nursing should also avoid taking Trilipix.

Cautions

  • Before you start treatment with Trilipix, talk to your doctor about:
    • All the prescription and nonprescription medications you take
    • Your allergies
    • Your current health conditions
    • Your past medical history
    • Your status of pregnancy or breastfeeding
  • Trilipix contains the following warnings and precautions:
    • Liver damage
    • Muscle pain and breakdown; the breakdown of muscle can result in the release of a harmful protein in the blood
    • Increased serum creatinine, which can indicate poor kidney function
    • Gallstones
    • Caution should be exercised when taking Trilipix with coumarin anticoagulants
    • Hypersensitivity reactions, including anaphylaxis and angioedema, and delayed hypersensitivity reactions, including severe cutaneous adverse drug reactions

Side Effects

Trilipix side effects may include but are not limited to abnormal liver tests, increased liver enzymes, increased CPK, and stuffy nose.

Immediately call your doctor if you experience bothersome or persistent side effects.
