What is a Generic Drug?

A generic drug is a copy of the brand-name drug with the same dosage, safety, strength, quality, consumption method, performance, and intended use. Before generics become available on the market, the generic company must prove it has the same active ingredients as the brand-name drug and works in the same way and in the same amount of time in the body.

The only differences between generics and their brand-name counterparts is that generics are less expensive and may look slightly different (eg. different shape or color), as trademarks laws prevent a generic from looking exactly like the brand-name drug.

Generics are less expensive because generic manufacturers don't have to invest large sums of money to develop a drug. When the brand-name patent expires, generic companies can manufacture a copy of the brand-name and sell it at a substantial discount.

Description

Trimbow consists of three medications: beclometasone/formoterol/glycopyrronium bromide; it is used for treating adults with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) and asthma.

Trimbow comes in an inhaler.

Directions

Trimbow should be used as your doctor has instructed. Carefully read the information that comes with your prescription. Inform your doctor or pharmacist of any questions or concerns you have.

Trimbow medication comes in two different strengths. The appropriate strength for you will be determined by your doctor depending on the condition being treated and other medications you are taking. Your doctor or other healthcare professional will instruct you on the proper use of your inhaler.

The recommended dose is to inhale two puffs by mouth twice daily; this is also the maximum dose.

Ingredients

Trimbow contains three medications:

  • beclometasone (corticosteroid) - helps decrease inflammation, which makes breathing easier
  • formoterol (long-acting beta-2 agonist) - helps relax the airway muscles, which keeps the airways open and makes breathing easier
  • glycopyrronium bromide (long-acting muscarinic receptor antagonist) - helps dilate the airways, which makes breathing easier

Contraindications

Trimbow should be avoided if you have an allergy to the medication or to any of its ingredients or excipients.

Cautions

  • Before you start treatment with Trimbow, inform your doctor of:
    • All the medications you take, including prescription and nonprescription medications
    • Your allergies
    • Your current health conditions
    • Your past medical history
    • Your pregnancy or breastfeeding status
  • Do not use Trimbow to treat an asthma attack or to treat sudden breathing problems.
  • Trimbow can cause allergic reactions, including angioedema (swelling, trouble breathing or swallowing), hives, and rash. Immediately seek emergency care if you have difficulty breathing, swelling of the face, lips, or tongue, rash, or any other sign or symptom of an allergic reaction.
  • Trimbow use can cause wheezing and shortness of breath that requires treatment with a fast-acting inhaled bronchodilator (reliever). If this occurs, stop Trimbow use and seek emergency care.
  • Trimbow should not be abruptly stopped.
  • Trimbow should be used cautiously in patients with heart arrhythmias, idiopathic subvalvular aortic stenosis, hypertrophic obstructive cardiomyopathy, severe heart disease, occlusive vascular diseases, arterial high blood pressure, aneurysm, thyroid problems, diabetes, pheochromocytoma, or untreated low potassium levels in the blood.
  • The risk of pneumonia is increased in COPD patients who use inhaled corticosteroids.
  • High-dose inhaled corticosteroids that are used for long periods of time can cause systemic effects, including Cushing’s syndrome, Cushingoid features, adrenal suppression, growth retardation, decreased bone mineral density, cataracts, glaucoma, psychomotor hyperactivity, sleep problems, anxiety, depression, or aggression.
  • Patients with pulmonary tuberculosis or fungal or viral infections in the airways should use Trimbow with caution.
  • Trimbow should be used cautiously in patients with narrow-angle glaucoma, prostatic hyperplasia, or urinary retention.
  • Long-term use of Trimbow is not recommended because of glycopyrronium’s anticholinergic effects.
  • Rinse your mouth with water without swallowing it or brush your teeth after Trimbow use in order to prevent fungal infections of the mouth.
  • Blurry vision and other vision problems can occur.
  • Patients with liver or kidney problems should use Trimbow cautiously and only if the benefits outweigh the risks.
  • Beta-2 agonists can cause low potassium levels in the blood.
  • The formoterol component of Trimbow can cause high blood sugar levels; therefore, blood sugar should be checked as recommended.

Side Effects

Trimbow side effects include, but are not limited to, changes in the sound of the voice, fungal infection of the mouth, muscle spasms, and dry mouth. If you have any bothersome or persistent side effects, call your doctor immediately.
