What is a Generic Drug?

A generic drug is a copy of the brand-name drug with the same dosage, safety, strength, quality, consumption method, performance, and intended use. Before generics become available on the market, the generic company must prove it has the same active ingredients as the brand-name drug and works in the same way and in the same amount of time in the body.

Description

Triphasil-28 (levonorgestrel and ethinyl estradiol tablets–triphasic regimen)

and Triphasil-21(levonorgestrel and ethinyl estradiol tablets–triphasic regimen) are oral contraceptive tablets used to prevent pregnancy.

Each Triphasil-28 (28 tablets) cycle consists of three different drug phases:

  • Phase 1: 6 brown tablets that contain 0.050 mg of levonorgestrel (a progestogen) and 0.030 mg of ethinyl estradiol
  • Phase 2: 5 white tablets that contain 0.075 mg of levonorgestrel and 0.040 mg of ethinyl estradiol
  • Phase 3: 10 light-yellow tablets that contain 0.125 mg of levonorgestrel and 0.030 mg of ethinyl estradiol
  • 7 light-green inert tablets

Each Triphasil-21 (21 tablets) cycle consists of three different drug phases:

  • Phase 1: 6 brown tablets that contain 0.050 mg of levonorgestrel and 0.030 mg of ethinyl estradiol
  • Phase 2: 5 white tablets that contain 0.075 mg of levonorgestrel and 0.040 mg of ethinyl estradiol
  • Phase 3: 10 light-yellow tablets that contain 0.125 mg of levonorgestrel and 0.030 mg of ethinyl estradiol

Ingredients

Levonorgestrel and ethinyl estradiol are the active ingredients in Triphasil-28 and Triphasil-21.

Cellulose, FD&C Blue 1, iron oxides, lactose, magnesium stearate, polacrilin potassium, polyethylene glycol, titanium dioxide, and hydroxypropyl methylcellulose are the inactive ingredients in Triphasil-28.

Cellulose, iron oxides, lactose, magnesium stearate, polacrilin potassium, polyethylene glycol, titanium dioxide, and hydroxypropyl methylcellulose are the inactive ingredients in Triphasil-21.

Contraindications

Women who have or develop any of the following should not take Triphasil:

  • Blood clot or blood clotting disorders
  • History of blood clots or blood clotting disorders
  • Cerebral vascular or coronary artery disease
  • Active or history of breast cancer
  • Vaginal bleeding that is abnormal and not diagnosed
  • Cholestatic jaundice of pregnancy or jaundice with previous Triphasil use
  • Liver tumors or cancers
  • Active or suspect pregnancy
  • Are taking hepatitis C medications that contain ombitasvir/paritaprevir/ritonavir, with or without dasabuvir

Cautions

  • Before you begin taking Triphasil, talk to your doctor about:
    • All the prescription and nonprescription medications you take
    • Your allergies
    • Your current health conditions
    • Your past medical history
    • Your pregnancy or breastfeeding status
  • Triphasil contains the followed boxed warning:
    • The risk of serious cardiovascular side effects from oral contraceptives is increased by smoking cigarettes. The risk increases with age and heavy smoking (15+ cigarettes/day); the risk is quite marked in women older than 35 years of age. Smoking is not advised while taking oral contraceptives.
  • Triphasil contains the following warnings and precautions:
    • Heart attack, blood clots, stroke, liver tumors, gallbladder disease, high blood pressure
    • Potential increased risk of malignant cancers, including breast and cervical cancer
    • Risk of increased liver enzyme if taking Triphasil with hepatitis C medications that contain contain ombitasvir/paritaprevir/ritonavir, with or without dasabuvir
    • Vision problems, including lesions
    • Glucose intolerance, insulin resistance, and high triglycerides
    • Migraine or headache
    • Irregular bleeding
    • Lipid disorders
    • Liver problems
    • Fluid retention
    • Emotional problems
    • Hereditary angioedema
    • Intolerance to contact lenses

Side Effects

Triphasil side effects may include but are not limited to blood clots in the veins, arteries, lungs, or brain; heart attack; brain bleed; high blood pressure; gallbladder disease; and liver tumors.
