What is a Generic Drug?

A generic drug is a copy of the brand-name drug with the same dosage, safety, strength, quality, consumption method, performance, and intended use. Before generics become available on the market, the generic company must prove it has the same active ingredients as the brand-name drug and works in the same way and in the same amount of time in the body.

The only differences between generics and their brand-name counterparts is that generics are less expensive and may look slightly different (eg. different shape or color), as trademarks laws prevent a generic from looking exactly like the brand-name drug.

Generics are less expensive because generic manufacturers don't have to invest large sums of money to develop a drug. When the brand-name patent expires, generic companies can manufacture a copy of the brand-name and sell it at a substantial discount.

Description

Bethanechol is a synthetic ester medication that works similarly to a natural substance in the body called acetylcholine. It helps muscles, especially those in the bladder, to contract or tighten. Doctors often prescribe Bethanechol to help people who have trouble urinating, which can happen after surgery or because of certain health problems. By activating specific receptors in the bladder, it encourages the body to urinate and helps empty the bladder.

Directions

Bethanechol should be taken as directed by a healthcare professional. Typically, the medication is to be consumed on an empty stomach, either 1 hour before or 2 hours after a meal to prevent nausea. A typical dosage of Bethanechol is 10 to 50 mg three or four times a day. Patients might experience a prompt to urinate within 30 to 60 minutes of taking the drug.

Ingredients

The active ingredient in Urecholine is Bethanechol.

Contraindications

Avoid taking Urecholine if any of the following apply:

  • Known hypersensitivity to Bethanechol Chloride
  • Hyperthyroidism, in which the thyroid gland is overactive
  • History of peptic ulcer disease
  • Active or latent bronchial asthma
  • Significant bradycardia (slow heart rate) or hypotension (low blood pressure)
  • Vasomotor instability, which can cause abrupt changes in blood pressure
  • Coronary artery disease, which could be worsened by drug-induced changes in heart rate or blood pressure
  • Epilepsy, as the risk of convulsions may be increased
  • Parkinsonism, which includes a spectrum of neurological symptoms such as tremors and movement difficulties

Cautions

  • Before taking Urecholine, make sure to tell your healthcare provider if you have:
    • Any existing health conditions
    • Any allergies
    • A list of all medications you are currently taking
    • Whether you are pregnant or breastfeeding
  • Urecholine may cause urine to flow backward into the kidneys if the bladder sphincter does not relax during bladder contraction. This could lead to kidney infection, especially if bacteria are present in the urine.
  • It is recommended to take Urecholine tablets one hour before or two hours after meals to reduce the risk of nausea or vomiting.
  • Dizziness, lightheadedness, or fainting may occur, especially when standing up from sitting or lying down. Move slowly to minimize these effects.
  • Special care is needed if Urecholine is taken with ganglion-blocking medications, as this combination may cause a severe drop in blood pressure. Severe abdominal symptoms may appear before blood pressure falls.
  • The safety of Urecholine during pregnancy has not been fully studied. It should only be used if the potential benefits outweigh the risks. Pregnant individuals should consult their healthcare provider.
  • It is not known if Urecholine passes into breast milk. Nursing mothers should discuss with their healthcare provider whether to stop breastfeeding or stop taking the medication.
  • The safety and effectiveness of Urecholine in children have not been established.

Side Effects

Urecholine side effects may include stomach discomfort, nausea, belching, diarrhea, and increased saliva. You might also feel flushed, sweaty, or warm, especially in your face. Other common symptoms include headaches and a strong need to urinate, but these often go away as your body gets used to the medication.

In rare cases, Urecholine can lead to more serious problems such as low blood pressure, fast heartbeat, or breathing difficulties. Some people may experience seizures or excessive tearing. If you notice severe stomach pain, trouble breathing, dizziness, or a racing heart, stop taking Urecholine and get medical help right away. Always inform your doctor about any ongoing or unusual side effects.
