What is a Generic Drug?

A generic drug is a copy of the brand-name drug with the same dosage, safety, strength, quality, consumption method, performance, and intended use. Before generics become available on the market, the generic company must prove it has the same active ingredients as the brand-name drug and works in the same way and in the same amount of time in the body.

The only differences between generics and their brand-name counterparts is that generics are less expensive and may look slightly different (eg. different shape or color), as trademarks laws prevent a generic from looking exactly like the brand-name drug.

Generics are less expensive because generic manufacturers don't have to invest large sums of money to develop a drug. When the brand-name patent expires, generic companies can manufacture a copy of the brand-name and sell it at a substantial discount.

Description

Vancocin, also known as Vancomycin, is an antibiotic used to treat serious bacterial infections, especially those caused by certain types of bacteria that are harder to fight. It works by stopping bacteria from building their cell walls, which helps get rid of the infection. Doctors often use Vancomycin to treat infections caused by a tough strain of Staphylococcus called MRSA, as well as a bacteria called Clostridioides difficile, which can cause severe intestinal problems.

Directions

Take Vancocin by mouth, typically every 6 to 8 hours, following a doctor's instructions. For the treatment of C. difficile-associated diarrhea in adults (18 years and older), the standard Vancocin dosage is 125 mg taken four times a day for 10 days.

For Staphylococcal enterocolitis in adults, the recommended dosage ranges from 500 mg to 2 g, divided into 3 or 4 doses each day for 7 to 10 days. Always adhere to your doctor's instructions regarding dosage and do not skip any doses or discontinue the medication early, even if you start to feel better.

Ingredients

The active ingredient in Vancocin is Vancomycin.

Contraindications

Avoid taking or using this medication if any of the following apply:

  • Known hypersensitivity to Vancomycin
  • History of severe allergic reactions to the drug

Cautions

  • Before using Vancocin, be sure to inform your healthcare provider if you have:
    • Any medical conditions
    • Any allergies
    • A list of all medications you are currently taking
    • Whether you are pregnant or breastfeeding
  • In some patients, especially those with intestinal inflammation or taking multiple doses, Vancocin may be absorbed into the bloodstream and lead to side effects similar to those seen with intravenous Vancomycin. Monitoring serum levels may be necessary, especially for patients with kidney problems or those on aminoglycoside antibiotics.
  • Nephrotoxicity (kidney damage) has been reported in patients using oral Vancocin, particularly in those over 65 years old. Regular monitoring of kidney function during and after treatment is advised, even for those with previously normal kidney function.
  • Ototoxicity (hearing damage) may occur with Vancocin use. This is more likely in patients with existing hearing issues, those receiving high doses, or those on other ototoxic medications. Regular hearing checks may help reduce this risk.
  • Severe skin reactions such as Stevens-Johnson syndrome, toxic epidermal necrolysis, or drug reaction with eosinophilia and systemic symptoms (DRESS) have been reported. If symptoms like skin rashes, blisters, or mucosal lesions develop, Vancocin should be stopped immediately.
  • Avoid prescribing Vancocin unnecessarily to prevent the development of drug-resistant bacteria. It should only be used for proven or strongly suspected bacterial infections.

Side Effects

The most common side effects of Vancocin affect the stomach and metabolism. Frequently reported issues include nausea, abdominal pain, low potassium, and vomiting or diarrhea. Other side effects may involve gas, headaches, urinary tract infections, and fatigue, with older adults more likely to experience complications like low potassium and swelling.

Severe side effects can include kidney damage, occurring in about 5% of patients after a week of treatment. Rare but serious effects may involve hearing loss, severe skin reactions, and blood disorders. Seek immediate medical help for allergic reactions, severe rashes, or breathing difficulties, and report any new or worsening symptoms like chest pain or persistent dizziness to a healthcare provider.
