What is a Generic Drug?

A generic drug is a copy of the brand-name drug with the same dosage, safety, strength, quality, consumption method, performance, and intended use. Before generics become available on the market, the generic company must prove it has the same active ingredients as the brand-name drug and works in the same way and in the same amount of time in the body.

The only differences between generics and their brand-name counterparts is that generics are less expensive and may look slightly different (eg. different shape or color), as trademarks laws prevent a generic from looking exactly like the brand-name drug.

Generics are less expensive because generic manufacturers don't have to invest large sums of money to develop a drug. When the brand-name patent expires, generic companies can manufacture a copy of the brand-name and sell it at a substantial discount.

Directions

Viibryd is taken by mouth with food to optimize absorption. Typically, treatment begins with a 10 mg dose once a day for 7 days, after which it is common to increase the dosage to 20 mg daily. The dosage may be increased to 40 mg daily if tolerated and as needed to effectively manage symptoms. It is important to follow your doctor's instructions and avoid adjusting the dosage without professional guidance. Be mindful that abruptly stopping the medication can lead to withdrawal symptoms, so a healthcare provider should always oversee the process of discontinuing this medication.

Ingredients

The active ingredient in Viibryd is Vilazodone.

Contraindications

Avoid taking or using this medication if any of the following apply:

  • Known hypersensitivity to Vilazodone or any of the inactive ingredients in the medication
  • Concurrent use of monoamine oxidase inhibitors (MAOIs) or if you have used an MAOI in the last 14 days due to increased risk of serotonin syndrome

Cautions

  • Before taking Viibryd, you may need to consult a healthcare provider about the following:
    • Any existing health conditions
    • Any allergies
    • A list of all medications you are currently taking
    • Whether you are pregnant or breastfeeding
  • Viibryd, like other antidepressants, may increase the risk of suicidal thoughts or actions, especially in people under 25. This risk is higher during the first few months of treatment or after a dose change.
  • Viibryd can cause a condition called serotonin syndrome, which can be life-threatening. This is more likely if you’re also taking other medications that affect serotonin, like certain antidepressants, migraine drugs, or St. John’s Wort.
  • Viibryd may increase your risk of bleeding, especially if you also take blood thinners (like warfarin), aspirin, or NSAIDs (like ibuprofen or naproxen). Let your doctor know if you bruise or bleed easily.
  • Viibryd may trigger mania or hypomania (unusually high energy or mood) in people with bipolar disorder. Before starting Viibryd, your doctor may ask about any history of mood swings or bipolar disorder in you or your family.
  • Stopping Viibryd suddenly can cause withdrawal symptoms like dizziness, irritability, anxiety, trouble sleeping, or “electric shock” feelings. Talk to your doctor before stopping Viibryd—they may help you taper off slowly.
  • Viibryd hasn’t been studied in people with seizures. If you’ve had seizures before, let your doctor know before starting.
  • Viibryd can increase pressure inside the eye, which may be dangerous if you have narrow-angle glaucoma. Avoid using Viibryd if you have untreated narrow angles unless your eye doctor says it’s safe.
  • Viibryd can sometimes cause low sodium levels in the blood, which may lead to headaches, confusion, trouble concentrating, weakness, or in severe cases, seizures and coma. Older adults and people taking diuretics are more at risk.
  • Viibryd may cause sexual problems, including low sex drive, trouble with orgasm, or difficulty with arousal. These issues can affect both men and women. If you notice changes, don’t hesitate to talk to your doctor—there may be options to help manage them.

Side Effects

The most common side effects of Viibryd include diarrhea, nausea, vomiting, and trouble sleeping. Some people may also experience dizziness or fatigue during treatment. These symptoms are usually mild, but if they persist or worsen, talk to your healthcare provider. Most side effects improve as your body adjusts to the medication.

Viibryd may cause serious side effects such as serotonin syndrome, especially when taken with other medications that affect serotonin levels. Signs include agitation, hallucinations, fever, sweating, and muscle stiffness. Other risks include increased bleeding, seizures, low sodium levels, and manic episodes in people with bipolar disorder. Sexual side effects and eye problems like angle-closure glaucoma have also been reported. Let your doctor know right away if you experience unusual mood changes, vision problems, or symptoms that feel severe.
