Visanne (Dienogest)

Description

Visanne is prescribed for treating endometriosis long-term in patients who are at least 12 years old and have had their first menstrual cycle.

Visanne is dispensed in 28-day packs that contain 2 mg oral tablets.

Directions

Visanne should be taken as directed by your doctor. The information leaflet that accompanies your prescription should be carefully read. Inform your doctor or pharmacist of any questions or concerns you have.

Recommended dosage: Visanne should be started on the first day of your menstrual cycle. Take one tablet by mouth one time a day at the same time each day. After you finish the pack, start the next one without interruption.

Visanne should be stored at or below 30°C (86°F) and out of reach of children.

Ingredients

Each Visanne pill contains 2 mg of dienogest and 63 mg of lactose monohydrate.

Contraindications

Visanne should be avoided in patients who have any of the following:

• Have a history of or currently have a blood clotting disorder
• Have a history of or currently have arterial and cardiovascular diseases, including heart attack, stroke, or ischemic heart disease
• Diabetes with vascular involvement
• Have a history of or currently have severe liver disease
• Have a history of or currently have cancerous or noncancerous liver tumors
• Have or suspect sex hormone-dependant cancer
• Vaginal bleeding has not been diagnosed
• An allergy to Visanne or to any of the other ingredients or excipients in the medication

Cautions

• Before you begin treatment with Visanne, inform your doctor of the following:
• All the medications you take, including prescription and over-the-counter medications
• Your allergies
• Your current health problems
• Your past medical history
• If you are pregnant
• If you are breastfeeding
• The risk of blood clots may be increased by Visanne use.
• The risk of breast cancer may be increased by Visanne use.
• Bone mineral density may be decreased by Visanne use.
• Careful monitoring should occur in patients who have had depression and are taking Visanne. If a patient develops severe depression, the medication should be discontinued.
• If patients develop high blood pressure, Visanne may need to be discontinued.
• If patients develop cholestatic jaundice and/or itchiness that has occurred during their first pregnancy or with previous sex steroid use, Visanne should be discontinued.
• Monitoring should occur in diabetic women who are taking Visanne, as insulin resistance and glucose tolerance can be affected by Visanne.
• The risk of ectopic pregnancies is higher in women who take progestogen-only medications compared to women who take combined oral contraceptives. Women who have had an extra-uterine pregnancy or tube function impairment
• should weigh the benefits and risks of taking Visanne.
• To prevent pregnancy, hormone-free birth control methods such as barrier contraception or a condom are recommended.
• Women, especially those who have a history of chloasma, may experience this skin pigment disorder while taking Visanne and should avoid sun exposure and UV radiation.
• Visanne may cause functional ovarian cyst.
• Each Visanne tablet contains lactose monohydrate. The amount of lactose in Visanne should be considered by patients with rare hereditary problems of galactose intolerance, Lapp lactase deficiency, or glucose-galactose malabsorption who are on a diet free of lactose.

Side Effects

Visanne side effects include but are not limited to weight changes, mood changes, sleep problems, loss of libido, headache, nausea, stomach pain, acne, hair loss, back pain, breast discomfort, and vaginal bleeding. Immediately inform your doctor of any bothersome or persistent side effects that you may experience.
