What is a Generic Drug?

A generic drug is a copy of the brand-name drug with the same dosage, safety, strength, quality, consumption method, performance, and intended use. Before generics become available on the market, the generic company must prove it has the same active ingredients as the brand-name drug and works in the same way and in the same amount of time in the body.

The only differences between generics and their brand-name counterparts is that generics are less expensive and may look slightly different (eg. different shape or color), as trademarks laws prevent a generic from looking exactly like the brand-name drug.

Generics are less expensive because generic manufacturers don't have to invest large sums of money to develop a drug. When the brand-name patent expires, generic companies can manufacture a copy of the brand-name and sell it at a substantial discount.

Description

Voltaren XR is an extended-release version of the nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID) known as Diclofenac Sodium. As an NSAID, it actively reduces the substances in the body that cause pain, fever, and inflammation. Doctors often prescribe it for people with different types of arthritis, like osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis. It can also help with mild to moderate pain and inflammation from other conditions. You take this medicine by mouth, usually in tablet form, and it works slowly over time to provide longer-lasting relief.

Directions

Voltaren XR is typically taken by mouth. Patients should take the drug with a full glass of water to help with absorption and reduce potential discomfort. It is important not to crush or chew the tablets; they should be swallowed whole. The standard dosage for managing symptoms of osteoarthritis or rheumatoid arthritis is 100 mg once daily, but the dosage may be increased to 100 mg twice daily if the benefits outweigh the risks. Individuals should closely follow their doctor's guidelines, as the dosage might be adjusted based on their specific health situation.

Ingredients

The active ingredient in Voltaren XR is Diclofenac Sodium.

Contraindications

Avoid taking or using this medication if any of the following apply:

  • Known hypersensitivity to Diclofenac or any other ingredient of the medication
  • History of asthma, urticaria, or allergic-type reactions after taking aspirin or other NSAIDs
  • For the management of perioperative pain in the setting of coronary artery bypass graft (CABG) surgery

Cautions

  • Before taking Voltaren XR, you may want to consult a healthcare provider about the following:
    • Any existing health conditions
    • Any allergies
    • A list of all medications you are currently taking
    • Whether you are pregnant or breastfeeding
  • Voltaren XR, like other NSAIDs, can increase the risk of serious heart-related problems, including heart attack and stroke. This risk may begin as early as the first few weeks of treatment and is more likely with higher doses or long-term use. People with heart disease or risk factors like high blood pressure, high cholesterol, or smoking are at even greater risk. Talk to your doctor if you notice chest pain, shortness of breath, or weakness on one side of the body.
  • Voltaren XR should not be used to relieve pain after heart bypass surgery (CABG), as it has been linked to serious complications including heart attack and stroke in this setting.
  • NSAIDs can cause serious stomach or intestinal problems, such as bleeding, ulcers, or holes in the digestive tract. These can happen without warning and may be fatal, especially in older adults or those with a history of ulcers or stomach bleeding. Let your doctor know if you experience stomach pain, black stools, or vomiting blood.
  • Voltaren XR can affect liver function, sometimes seriously. Symptoms can include fatigue, nausea, loss of appetite, yellowing of the skin or eyes, dark urine, or upper abdominal pain. Your doctor may check your liver with blood tests, especially during the first few months of treatment.
  • This medication may affect how well your kidneys work, especially if you already have kidney problems, are dehydrated, or are taking diuretics or blood pressure medications. It may also cause fluid retention or swelling. Your doctor may check your kidney function with blood tests and ask you to watch for signs like swelling in your legs, weight gain, or decreased urination.
  • Voltaren XR can raise your blood pressure or make existing high blood pressure worse. Your doctor will likely monitor your blood pressure during treatment, especially if you are already being treated for hypertension.
  • People with heart failure should use Voltaren XR with caution. This medicine can worsen symptoms like shortness of breath, swelling in the legs or feet, and weight gain. Let your doctor know if your heart symptoms get worse.
  • Rare but serious skin problems, such as Stevens-Johnson Syndrome (SJS), can happen while taking Voltaren XR. These may begin with a rash, fever, or blisters. Stop the medication right away and contact your doctor if any skin symptoms appear.
  • In rare cases, this medication can cause a severe allergic reaction, especially in people with a history of reactions to aspirin or other NSAIDs. Symptoms include trouble breathing, swelling of the face or throat, or hives. Seek emergency help if these occur.
  • Voltaren XR should not be used in the last three months of pregnancy because it may cause serious complications for the unborn baby, including kidney problems and heart defects. Between 20 and 30 weeks, it should be used only if absolutely necessary and for the shortest possible time.
  • Small amounts of Diclofenac may pass into breast milk. Talk to your doctor about other options if you are nursing.
  • Voltaren XR may increase the risk of bleeding or cause low red blood cell counts. If you notice unusual tiredness, pale skin, or bleeding that won't stop, contact your doctor. The risk is higher if you're also taking blood thinners, aspirin, or certain antidepressants (SSRIs or SNRIs).
  • Some people may feel dizzy while taking Voltaren XR, especially when standing up quickly. Avoid driving or operating machinery until you know how this medication affects you.
  • If you’re using Voltaren XR long-term, your doctor may want to monitor your liver, kidney function, and blood counts with lab tests.

Side Effects

The most common side effects of Voltaren XR include stomach pain, nausea, diarrhea, constipation, heartburn, and headache. Some people also report dizziness, rash, itching, or ringing in the ears. Like other NSAIDs, Voltaren XR can raise liver enzymes or cause fluid retention. These effects are generally mild but may lead to stopping the medication in some cases.

Serious side effects are less common but can include liver problems, kidney issues, ulcers, and bleeding in the stomach or intestines. Rarely, allergic reactions, skin rashes like Stevens-Johnson syndrome, or breathing problems have been reported. Voltaren XR may also affect blood counts or cause vision changes. Contact your doctor right away if you notice chest pain, severe skin reactions, dark urine, or unusual bleeding.
