What is a Generic Drug?

A generic drug is a copy of the brand-name drug with the same dosage, safety, strength, quality, consumption method, performance, and intended use. Before generics become available on the market, the generic company must prove it has the same active ingredients as the brand-name drug and works in the same way and in the same amount of time in the body.

The only differences between generics and their brand-name counterparts is that generics are less expensive and may look slightly different (eg. different shape or color), as trademarks laws prevent a generic from looking exactly like the brand-name drug.

Generics are less expensive because generic manufacturers don't have to invest large sums of money to develop a drug. When the brand-name patent expires, generic companies can manufacture a copy of the brand-name and sell it at a substantial discount.

Description

Voltaren suppositories contain diclofenac sodium, which falls under the classification of non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs). They work by reducing substances in the body that cause pain and inflammation. Commonly, doctors prescribe them for alleviating symptoms associated with various inflammatory conditions, such as arthritis, by relieving pain and decreasing swelling and stiffness. They come in different strengths to accommodate varying levels of pain and inflammation.

Contraindications

Avoid taking or using Voltaren suppositories if any of the following apply:

  • You have a known allergy to diclofenac sodium or any other component of the medication.
  • You have a history of asthma attacks, hives, or other allergic reactions after taking aspirin or other NSAIDs.
  • You've recently had or are about to have coronary artery bypass graft (CABG) surgery.
  • You suffer from active or recurrent stomach or intestinal ulcers or bleeding.
  • You have severe liver or kidney disease.
  • You’re in the last trimester of pregnancy due to the risk of harm to the fetus.
  • You have been diagnosed with heart disease or have risk factors for cardiovascular events, such as heart attack or stroke.
  • You’re taking other medications that can interact negatively with diclofenac, such as certain blood thinners or corticosteroids.

Cautions

  • Before initiating treatment with Voltaren Suppositories, make sure to disclose the following to your healthcare provider:
    • Any existing health conditions
    • Known allergies
    • A complete list of medications you are currently using
    • Your status regarding pregnancy or breastfeeding
  • Regularly review your treatment with a healthcare provider, especially if it's long-term, to check for its effectiveness and any side effects. It's important to monitor your blood pressure, blood hemoglobin, and kidney function as part of your ongoing care.
  • Voltaren might increase the risk of serious heart-related events like heart attacks or strokes, especially when used for a long time or in high doses. It's usually not suitable if you've had a recent heart attack or have heart disease or high blood pressure that isn't controlled.
  • This medication can cause new or worsened high blood pressure, which might further increase heart risks. Your blood pressure should be closely watched after you start using Voltaren.
  • Fluid retention and swelling can occur with Voltaren, potentially worsening heart failure. Use it cautiously if you have heart conditions.
  • There are significant risks for your stomach and intestines with Voltaren, such as bleeding, ulcers, or perforation. These can happen without warning and are more risky for older adults. Stop using Voltaren if you experience severe gastrointestinal issues.
  • Severe skin reactions can occur even without previous exposure to the medication. Watch for signs like rashes or blisters and stop using Voltaren if these symptoms develop.
  • Voltaren might mask signs of infections, especially in those with asthma or other lung conditions, possibly worsening these conditions.
  • Your liver could be affected by Voltaren, so it's advised to use it cautiously if you have liver issues. Regular liver function tests are recommended.
  • The medication can impact kidney function, especially in those who already have kidney problems or are on certain other medications. Keep an eye on your kidney function while using Voltaren.
  • Potential blood-related effects like changes in platelet function and other blood cell counts could occur. Regular blood monitoring is advised during prolonged use.
  • Extra caution is needed for elderly patients, as they are more susceptible to adverse effects. It's recommended to use the lowest effective dose in these individuals.

Side Effects

When using Voltaren Suppositories, the most frequent mild side effects include stomach pain, heartburn, nausea, diarrhea, and headache. Users may also experience dizziness, skin rash, or local irritation where the suppository is inserted. These effects are generally mild and temporary.

Contact your doctor immediately if you encounter any of the following severe side effects:

  • Chest pain, which may be an indicator of a heart attack.
  • Shortness of breath or swelling in the legs, potential signs of heart failure.
  • Sudden changes in vision, speech, or balance, which are possible symptoms of a stroke.
  • Severe stomach pain or signs of bleeding in the stomach or intestines, such as bloody stools or vomiting blood.
  • Allergic reactions like severe rashes, swelling of the face or throat, or intense itching.
  • Yellowing of the skin or eyes, suggesting liver problems.
  • Changes in urine output or appearance, which could indicate kidney issues.
