What is a Generic Drug?

A generic drug is a copy of the brand-name drug with the same dosage, safety, strength, quality, consumption method, performance, and intended use. Before generics become available on the market, the generic company must prove it has the same active ingredients as the brand-name drug and works in the same way and in the same amount of time in the body.

The only differences between generics and their brand-name counterparts is that generics are less expensive and may look slightly different (eg. different shape or color), as trademarks laws prevent a generic from looking exactly like the brand-name drug.

Generics are less expensive because generic manufacturers don't have to invest large sums of money to develop a drug. When the brand-name patent expires, generic companies can manufacture a copy of the brand-name and sell it at a substantial discount.

Description

Winlevi (Clascoterone) is a topical medication classified as an androgen receptor inhibitor. It is used for the treatment of acne vulgaris in patients aged 12 years and older. It works by blocking certain hormones in the skin that can cause acne by making the skin produce too much oil. By reducing this oil production, Winlevi helps clear up breakouts.

Directions

Winlevi cream should be applied topically to clean, dry skin. For best results, use a fingertip amount, about 1 gram, and spread it gently over the affected area twice a day, once in the morning and once in the evening. To ensure proper application, do not wash the treated areas right after applying the cream. Avoid contact with eyes, mouth, and any mucous membranes. If it happens, rinse thoroughly with water.

Ingredients

The active ingredient in Winlevi is Clascoterone.

Contraindications

The manufacturer has stated that there are no known contraindications associated with Winlevi. Nonetheless, it is important to consult a healthcare professional if you have particular concerns. Do not take or use this medication if you are aware of any allergies to Winlevi ingredients.

Cautions

  • Prior to initiating treatment with Winlevi, make sure to disclose the following to your healthcare provider:
    • Any existing health conditions
    • Known allergies
    • A complete list of medications you are currently using
    • Your status regarding pregnancy or breastfeeding
  • Winlevi cream may cause redness, itching, or dryness. Limit using it with other irritating products like harsh soaps, alcohol-based cosmetics, or astringents. Don’t apply it on broken or sunburned skin.
  • Winlevi may affect hormone levels, especially if used over large areas or for a long time, potentially causing HPA axis suppression. If this happens, you may need to stop using it. Children are more at risk for this effect.

Side Effects

The most common side effects of Winlevi cream include redness, dryness, and itching at the site where it's applied. You may also notice some scaling or peeling of the skin. These reactions are usually mild and tend to improve as your skin adjusts to the treatment.

Winlevi can cause more serious local skin reactions such as burning, significant redness, or peeling. In rare cases, it may lead to adrenal insufficiency, where your body doesn’t produce enough hormones. If you feel unusually weak, fatigued, or dizzy, stop using Winlevi and contact your healthcare provider immediately.
