What is a Generic Drug?

Description

Xalkori (crizotinib) is a medication prescribed for non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) in adults; refractory or relapsed systemic anaplastic large cell lymphoma (ALCL) in young adults and pediatric patients who are 1+ years old; and recurrent, unresectable, or refractory inflammatory myofibroblastic tumor (IMT) in adults and pediatric patients who are 1+ years old.

Xalkori comes in 200 mg and 250 mg capsules for oral administration. Oral pellets are also available in 20 mg, 50 mg, and 150 mg strengths.

Directions

Xalkori should be taken as directed by your or your child’s doctor. The doctor will tell you how much medication should be taken depending on weight and diagnosis.

Xalkori capsules and oral pellets should be kept at temperatures between 20°C and 25°C (68°F and 77°F); keep away from children’s reach.

Ingredients

Crizotinib is the active ingredient in Xalkori.

Colloidal silicon dioxide, microcrystalline cellulose, anhydrous dibasic calcium phosphate, sodium starch glycolate, magnesium stearate, and hard gelatin capsule shells are the inactive ingredients in the capsules. The pink opaque capsule shell also contains gelatin, titanium dioxide, and red iron oxide. The white opaque capsule shell also contains gelatin and titanium dioxide. The printing ink contains shellac, propylene glycol, strong ammonia solution, potassium hydroxide, and black iron oxide.

Poloxamer and stearyl alcohol. The film-coating includes hypromellose, glyceryl monostearate, medium chain triglycerides, polyethylene glycol/macrogol, sucrose, and talc are the inactive ingredients in the uncoated oral pellets.

Contraindications

Xalkori does not have any contraindications per the most recent Prescribing Information.

Cautions

  • Prior to you or your child beginning Xalkori medication, the following should be discussed with the doctor:
    • All the medications you or your child takes, including prescription and over-the-counter medications, vitamins, and supplements
    • Allergies that you or your child has
    • Current health problems that you or child has
    • You or your child’s past medical history
    • If you or your child is pregnant or breastfeeding
  • Xalkori contains the following warnings and precautions:
    • Liver issues
    • Interstitial lung disease/pneumonitis
    • A type of irregular heart rhythm called QT interval prolongation
    • Slow heart rate
    • Loss of vision that’s severe
    • Toxicity of the stomach and intestines, which can cause severe nausea, diarrhea, vomiting, and mouth that is sore or inflamed
    • Fetal harm; females who are of reproductive potential should be advised to use effective contraception while being treated with Xalkori and for 45 days after taking the last dose of treatment. Condoms are recommended while being treated with Xalkori and for 90 days after taking the last dose of treatment in males with female partners who are of reproductive age
    • Women should be advised against breastfeeding

Side Effects

Xalkori side effects that are most common in patients receiving the medication for:

  • NSCLC: problems with vision, diarrhea, constipation, nausea, vomiting, swelling, elevated liver enzymes, fatigue, loss of appetite, upper respiratory infection, dizziness, and nerve damage
  • ALCL: nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, problems with vision, headache, musculoskeletal pain, mouth that’s inflamed or sore, fatigue, loss of appetite, fever, abdominal pain, cough, itching, abnormal labs (reduced neutrophils, lymphocytes, and platelets)
  • Adults with IMT: problems with vision, nausea, and swelling
  • Pediatric patients with IMT: nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, constipation, abdominal pain, rash, problems with vision, upper respiratory tract infection, cough, fever, musculoskeletal pain, fatigue, swelling, and headache
