What is a Generic Drug?

A generic drug is a copy of the brand-name drug with the same dosage, safety, strength, quality, consumption method, performance, and intended use. Before generics become available on the market, the generic company must prove it has the same active ingredients as the brand-name drug and works in the same way and in the same amount of time in the body.

The only differences between generics and their brand-name counterparts is that generics are less expensive and may look slightly different (eg. different shape or color), as trademarks laws prevent a generic from looking exactly like the brand-name drug.

Generics are less expensive because generic manufacturers don't have to invest large sums of money to develop a drug. When the brand-name patent expires, generic companies can manufacture a copy of the brand-name and sell it at a substantial discount.

Description

Xeloda (Capecitabine) is a medication that helps treat certain types of cancer. It works by blocking the growth of cancer cells. When you take Xeloda, your body changes it into an active form that targets cancer, specifically a substance called 5-fluorouracil. This medicine is mainly used for metastatic breast cancer and colorectal cancer. Doctors might prescribe it on its own or with other treatments, like chemotherapy or radiation.

Directions

Xeloda is taken orally as prescribed by a healthcare professional. Patients usually take the medication twice a day, once in the morning and once in the evening. It's important to take it with water within 30 minutes after finishing a meal to ensure optimal absorption. The typical Xeloda dosage can vary depending on the specific condition being treated. Patients with colon cancer might have different dosages compared to those being treated for breast cancer. It's important to follow the exact dosage instructions given by a doctor.

Ingredients

The active ingredient in Xeloda is Capecitabine.

Contraindications

Avoid taking or using this medication if you have a known hypersensitivity to Capecitabine, Fluorouracil, or any ingredients in the medication.

Cautions

  • Before starting treatment with Xeloda, make sure to inform your healthcare provider if you have:
    • Any medical conditions
    • Any allergies
    • A list of all medications you are currently taking
    • Whether you are pregnant or breastfeeding
  • People with certain genetic variants affecting DPD activity (enzyme deficiency) may have an increased risk of serious and potentially fatal side effects from Xeloda, including severe diarrhea, mouth sores, low white blood cells, and nerve issues. Xeloda is not recommended for those with a complete lack of this enzyme. Your doctor may withhold or permanently discontinue treatment based on your condition.
  • Heart issues may occur, especially in patients with a history of heart disease. Let your doctor know if you experience chest pain, shortness of breath, or heart-related symptoms. Resuming Xeloda after heart-related side effects have resolved may not be safe.
  • Diarrhea can occur. The severity will determine whether your doctor adjusts, pauses, or stops your treatment. Inform your doctor if diarrhea becomes severe.
  • Dehydration may occur, which can affect your kidney function. Stay well-hydrated before and during treatment. Your doctor will monitor your hydration levels and kidney function.
  • Kidney problems may arise. Your doctor will check your kidney function before and during treatment. Adjustments to your dosage may be needed if issues develop.
  • Severe skin reactions may occur. If you notice a worsening skin condition, inform your doctor immediately. Xeloda will be permanently stopped if a serious reaction develops.
  • Palmar-Plantar Erythrodysesthesia Syndrome (hand-foot syndrome), causing redness, swelling, or pain in your hands and feet, may occur. Your doctor may pause, reduce, or stop treatment based on the severity.
  • Low blood counts (myelosuppression) may happen. Your doctor will check your blood counts before starting and during treatment. Xeloda is not recommended if your baseline white blood cell or platelet counts are too low.
  • High bilirubin levels in your blood may occur. If this happens, your doctor will pause treatment until levels improve and adjust your dosage.
  • Xeloda may cause harm to an unborn baby. If you are pregnant or could become pregnant, use effective contraception and discuss risks with your doctor.

Side Effects

Xeloda can cause several side effects, including hand and foot syndrome, diarrhea, nausea, tiredness, abdominal pain, and high bilirubin levels in the blood. People with metastatic breast cancer or colorectal cancer may experience additional effects like low red or white blood cell counts, skin inflammation, mouth sores, and vomiting. Hair loss and swelling can happen when Xeloda is used with other treatments.

Serious side effects are possible, such as severe diarrhea, dehydration, and heart problems like chest pain or irregular heartbeats. Those with a deficiency in the DPD enzyme face a higher risk of severe reactions, including low blood cell counts and serious mouth sores. If you notice symptoms like skin blistering, significant swelling, yellowing of the skin or eyes, or a high fever, contact your healthcare provider right away.
