What is a Generic Drug?

A generic drug is a copy of the brand-name drug with the same dosage, safety, strength, quality, consumption method, performance, and intended use. Before generics become available on the market, the generic company must prove it has the same active ingredients as the brand-name drug and works in the same way and in the same amount of time in the body.

The only differences between generics and their brand-name counterparts is that generics are less expensive and may look slightly different (eg. different shape or color), as trademarks laws prevent a generic from looking exactly like the brand-name drug.

Generics are less expensive because generic manufacturers don't have to invest large sums of money to develop a drug. When the brand-name patent expires, generic companies can manufacture a copy of the brand-name and sell it at a substantial discount.

Description

Xylocaine Jelly 2% (Lidocaine) is a medicine used to numb specific areas of the body by blocking pain signals from nerves. It contains lidocaine hydrochloride, which provides localized pain relief when applied to mucous membranes, such as in the mouth, nose, or urethra. This makes medical procedures, like inserting a catheter or performing minor surgeries, more comfortable for people by reducing discomfort during the process.

Directions

To apply Xylocaine Jelly 2% (Lidocaine), ensure the affected area is clean and dry. Use the appropriate amount by applying a thin layer directly to the area. If used for endotracheal intubation, apply to the external surface of the tube. The onset of action is typically 3 to 5 minutes. Be cautious of excessive application to prevent high blood levels. This medication should only be used as directed by a healthcare provider.

Ingredients

Xylocaine Jelly 2% contains Lidocaine Hydrochloride.

Contraindications

Avoid taking or using this medication if any of the following apply:

  • A known history of hypersensitivity to local anesthetics of the amide type.
  • Allergic reactions to other components of Xylocaine 2% Jelly.

Cautions

  • Before using Xylocaine, ensure you provide your healthcare provider with the following information:
    • Existing health conditions
    • Known allergies
    • A list of all the medications you are currently taking
    • Your pregnancy or breastfeeding status
  • It’s important to stick to the recommended dosage and how often you apply Xylocaine. Taking too much or doses too close together can lead to dangerous levels in your blood and serious health issues.
  • Be careful using Xylocaine if there is infection or severe damage in the area where it's applied, as this can lead to faster absorption into your body. Avoid using the jelly to lubricate devices like breathing tubes, as it can block them.
  • Xylocaine may cause a condition called methemoglobinemia, especially in people with certain health conditions or very young infants. This makes your skin look blue and can be dangerous, needing immediate medical attention.
  • Using Xylocaine safely requires the right dose, proper application technique, and readiness for emergencies. The lowest effective dose should be used particularly in people who are very ill, elderly, or have heart problems.
  • If you have allergies, especially to certain types of pain relievers, use Xylocaine cautiously. Not all pain relievers cause reactions in all people, but it’s better to be safe.
  • There’s a chance that Xylocaine could trigger a severe reaction during surgery known as malignant hyperthermia.

Side Effects

Xylocaine Jelly side effects may include effects similar to those seen with other local anesthetics. Commonly, people might experience lightheadedness, nervousness, and confusion. Sensory effects like blurred vision, ringing in the ears, or changes in temperature perception are also noted. These symptoms generally stem from the medication entering the bloodstream too quickly and are often dose-dependent. Most of these side effects are mild and temporary.

More severe reactions to Xylocaine include respiratory depression, profound drowsiness progressing to unconsciousness, and cardiovascular problems, such as low blood pressure and slowed heart rate. Severe allergic reactions like swelling, severe itching, or breathing difficulties are rare but require urgent medical intervention. Treatment for serious symptoms may involve respiratory support with oxygen, medications to manage convulsions, and emergency cardiovascular support, depending on the severity.
