What is a Generic Drug?

A generic drug is a copy of the brand-name drug with the same dosage, safety, strength, quality, consumption method, performance, and intended use. Before generics become available on the market, the generic company must prove it has the same active ingredients as the brand-name drug and works in the same way and in the same amount of time in the body.

The only differences between generics and their brand-name counterparts is that generics are less expensive and may look slightly different (eg. different shape or color), as trademarks laws prevent a generic from looking exactly like the brand-name drug.

Generics are less expensive because generic manufacturers don't have to invest large sums of money to develop a drug. When the brand-name patent expires, generic companies can manufacture a copy of the brand-name and sell it at a substantial discount.

Description

Xyzal (Levocetirizine Dihydrochloride) is a medication used to relieve allergy symptoms. It works by blocking histamine receptors in the body that play a role in allergic reactions. People often use Xyzal to help with issues like a runny nose, watery eyes, and sneezing. It can be effective for both seasonal allergies, like those caused by pollen, and year-round allergies, such as dust or pet dander. In addition, Xyzal is helpful for reducing itching and swelling in people with chronic hives, and it can be used for individuals who are at least six months old.

Directions

Xyzal should be taken exactly as directed on the label, or as prescribed by your doctor. Adults and children twelve years of age and older typically take 5 mg once daily in the evening. Some people may be adequately controlled on 2.5 mg once daily. For children 6 to 11 years old, the recommended Xyzal dosage is 2.5 mg once daily in the evening. The oral solution formulation can be used for patients who require smaller doses or who may have difficulty swallowing tablets.

Ingredients

The active ingredient in Xyzal is Levocetirizine Dihydrochloride.

Contraindications

Avoid taking or using this medication if any of the following apply:

  • Known hypersensitivity to Xyzal ingredients, such as Levocetirizine Dihydrochloride, its parent compound Cetirizine, or any of the inactive ingredients present in the formulation.
  • Patients with end-stage renal disease (ESRD) with a creatinine clearance less than 10 mL/min.
  • Individuals undergoing hemodialysis, as the drug is not effectively removed by dialysis.
  • Children 6 months to 11 years old with kidney problems.

Cautions

  • Before starting treatment with Xyzal, be sure to inform your healthcare provider if you have:
    • Any existing health conditions
    • Any allergies
    • A list of all medications you are currently taking
    • Whether you are pregnant or breastfeeding
  • Xyzal may cause drowsiness, fatigue, or weakness in some people. Avoid driving, operating machinery, or engaging in activities requiring full mental alertness until you know how it affects you.
  • Combining Xyzal with alcohol or other central nervous system depressants can worsen drowsiness and impair mental function. Avoid these combinations.
  • Xyzal may increase the risk of urinary retention, especially if you have conditions like a spinal cord injury or an enlarged prostate. Stop taking Xyzal and contact your doctor if you have trouble urinating.

Side Effects

The most common side effects of Xyzal in adults and adolescents include drowsiness, fatigue, dry mouth, nasopharyngitis (common cold), and sore throat. In children aged 6 to 12 years, common side effects include fever, drowsiness, cough, and nosebleeds. For younger children, side effects such as diarrhea, vomiting, and ear infections have been reported.

While rare, if you experience any unusual symptoms or allergic reactions such as rash, swelling, or difficulty breathing, seek medical attention immediately. Contact your healthcare provider if side effects persist or worsen, particularly in children, as they may require adjustments in treatment.
