Terms & Conditions of Program
A generic drug is a copy of the brand-name drug with the same dosage, safety, strength, quality, consumption method, performance, and intended use. Before generics become available on the market, the generic company must prove it has the same active ingredients as the brand-name drug and works in the same way and in the same amount of time in the body.
The only differences between generics and their brand-name counterparts is that generics are less expensive and may look slightly different (eg. different shape or color), as trademarks laws prevent a generic from looking exactly like the brand-name drug.
Generics are less expensive because generic manufacturers don't have to invest large sums of money to develop a drug. When the brand-name patent expires, generic companies can manufacture a copy of the brand-name and sell it at a substantial discount.
Zaditen (ketotifen) tablets is a medication used as an add-on treatment for mild atopic asthma. Ketotifen tablets are prescribed as treatment outside of the United States and there is no FDA approval for this usage.
Ketotifen is an antihistamine and mast cell stabilizer. During allergic and asthmatic responses, the body releases molecular signals that mediate the inflammatory response. Ketotifen prevents the release and function of these signals, dampening an inflammatory response. When taken on a regular basis, ketotifen tablets help to ease the frequency, severity, and duration of asthma attacks. Ketotifen does not treat an acute asthma attack.
Adults and children 3 years or older should take ketotifen 1 mg twice daily.
Ketotifen should only be used in combination with other treatments for asthma, and not on its own.
The active ingredient in Zaditen is ketotifen fumarate.
When combined with oral medications used to treat diabetes, ketotifen tablets have been reported to cause thrombocytopenia.
When starting treating, dizziness, fatigue, and dry mouth are common. These effects usually go away on their own within the first few weeks.
Ketotifen has been known to cause an increase in liver enzymes, and levels should be monitored by a doctor when starting treatment.
The adverse effects of ketotifen may include:
