What is a Generic Drug?

A generic drug is a copy of the brand-name drug with the same dosage, safety, strength, quality, consumption method, performance, and intended use. Before generics become available on the market, the generic company must prove it has the same active ingredients as the brand-name drug and works in the same way and in the same amount of time in the body.

The only differences between generics and their brand-name counterparts is that generics are less expensive and may look slightly different (eg. different shape or color), as trademarks laws prevent a generic from looking exactly like the brand-name drug.

Generics are less expensive because generic manufacturers don't have to invest large sums of money to develop a drug. When the brand-name patent expires, generic companies can manufacture a copy of the brand-name and sell it at a substantial discount.

Description

Zebinix (Eslicarbazepine Acetate) is a medicine used mainly to treat certain types of seizures in people with epilepsy. It works as a prodrug, meaning it changes into another form in the body called Eslicarbazepine, which helps regulate electrical activity in the brain. By blocking specific channels that allow sodium to flow in and out of cells, it helps decrease the strong electrical signals that can lead to seizures. People can take Zebinix on its own or along with other medications to help control their seizures.

Directions

Zebinix is taken orally, typically as a tablet or an oral suspension. Patients should follow their doctor's prescription precisely for dosage and timing. The standard starting dose is usually 400 mg once daily, which may be increased based on the individual's response and tolerance.

Ingredients

The active ingredient in Zebinix is Eslicarbazepine Acetate.

Contraindications

Avoid taking or using this medication if any of the following apply:

  • Hypersensitivity to Eslicarbazepine Acetate
  • Second or third degree atrioventricular (AV) block

Cautions

  • Before starting treatment with Zebinix, be sure to inform your healthcare provider if you have:
    • Any medical conditions
    • Any allergies
    • A list of all medications you are currently taking
    • Whether you are pregnant or breastfeeding
  • People taking Zebinix may experience suicidal thoughts or behaviors.
  • Dizziness and drowsiness are possible side effects and can increase the risk of accidental injury. Caution is advised during activities requiring alertness.
  • If discontinuing Zebinix, taper the dose gradually to avoid an increase in seizures.
  • People of Han Chinese, Thai, or other Asian descent should be screened for the HLA-B*1502 allele before starting treatment. Those positive for this genetic marker may have a higher risk of severe skin reactions.
  • People of European or Japanese descent with the HLA-A*3101 allele may also be at increased risk of skin reactions. Use Zebinix cautiously if the benefits outweigh the risks.
  • Low sodium levels (hyponatremia) may occur, sometimes leading to confusion, seizures, or reduced consciousness. Monitor sodium levels, especially in patients with kidney disease or those on medications that lower sodium levels.
  • Prolonged PR intervals have been observed, which may require caution in patients with heart conditions or those taking medications affecting cardiac conduction.
  • In people with kidney problems, adjust the dose based on kidney function. Zebinix is not recommended for people with severe kidney impairment.
  • Caution is recommended in people with mild to moderate liver problems. It is not recommended for those with severe liver impairment.

Side Effects

Zebinix side effects include dizziness, drowsiness, nausea, and headaches. Other possible effects include fatigue and difficulty concentrating. These side effects are usually mild and may lessen as your body gets used to the drug. If they persist or worsen, it’s important to talk to your doctor.

Serious side effects can occur with Zebinix, such as severe allergic reactions that may cause swelling of the face or difficulty breathing. Other serious conditions include skin reactions like Stevens-Johnson syndrome and liver problems. If you notice extreme fatigue, unusual bruising, or chest pain, seek medical help right away. Regular check-ups and reporting any concerning symptoms can help manage risks.
