What is a Generic Drug?

Description

Zepatier (elbasvir and grazoprevir) is a medication prescribed for treating chronic hepatitis C virus genotype 1 or 4 infection in adults and pediatric patients who are 12+ years of age and weigh 30+ kg. It may be administered with ribavirin in certain patients.

Zepatier oral tablets contain 50 mg elbasvir and 100 mg grazoprevir.

Recommended dosing: one tablet by mouth one time a day with or without food.

Store Zepatier in the original packaging between 20°C and 25°C (68°F and 77°F).

Ingredients

Elbasvir and grazoprevir are the active ingredients in Zepatier.

Colloidal silicon dioxide, copovidone, croscarmellose sodium, hypromellose, lactose monohydrate, magnesium stearate, mannitol, microcrystalline cellulose, sodium chloride, sodium lauryl sulfate, vitamin E polyethylene glycol succinate, carnauba wax, ferrosoferric oxide, hypromellose, iron oxide red, iron oxide yellow, lactose monohydrate, titanium dioxide, and triacetin are the inactive ingredients.

Contraindications

Zepatier should not be given to patients with moderate or severe liver dysfunction.

Zepatier should not be taken with OATP1B1/3 inhibitors that can significantly increase grazoprevir plasma concentrations, strong CYP3A4 inducers, and efavirenz. Talk to your doctor about whether you take these medications.

If you are also taking ribavirin, its contraindications also apply. Consult your doctor or pharmacist about any contraindications you may have.

Cautions

  • Zepatier is associated with the following FDA Boxed Warning:
    • Hepatitis B virus reactivation has been reported and has resulted in–in some cases–fulminant liver inflammation, liver failure, and death.
  • Before you start treatment with Zepatier, discuss the following with your doctor:
    • All the medications you take, including prescription and nonprescription medications
    • Your allergies
    • Your existing health conditions
    • Your previous medical history
    • If you are pregnant or breastfeeding
  • Zepatier is associated with the following warnings and precautions:
    • Risk of reactivation of hepatitis B virus
    • Increased liver function test (ALT)
    • Risk of liver decompensation or failure in patients with evidential advanced liver disease
    • Ribavirin’s warnings and precautions also apply if you are taking it; consult your doctor or pharmacist about warnings and precautions associated with ribavirin

Side Effects

Zepatier medication side effects include but are not limited to headache, fatigue, and nausea.
