What is a Generic Drug?

A generic drug is a copy of the brand-name drug with the same dosage, safety, strength, quality, consumption method, performance, and intended use. Before generics become available on the market, the generic company must prove it has the same active ingredients as the brand-name drug and works in the same way and in the same amount of time in the body.

The only differences between generics and their brand-name counterparts is that generics are less expensive and may look slightly different (eg. different shape or color), as trademarks laws prevent a generic from looking exactly like the brand-name drug.

Generics are less expensive because generic manufacturers don't have to invest large sums of money to develop a drug. When the brand-name patent expires, generic companies can manufacture a copy of the brand-name and sell it at a substantial discount.

Description

Zofran ODT (ondansetron) is a prescription medication for the prevention of nausea and vomiting associated with chemotherapy, radiotherapy, or procedures.

Zofran ODT comes in 4 mg and 8 mg oral disintegrating tablets.

Directions

Zofran ODT should be taken as your doctor has instructed. If you have any questions or concerns, contact your doctor or pharmacist.

Your doctor will instruct you on your Zofran ODT dosage, including how to take it and when to take it.

Place the Zofran ODT tablet on the tongue and allow it to dissolve. You do not need water for dissolving or swallowing the tablet.

Ingredients

Ondsanetron is the active ingredient in Zofran ODT. Aspartame, gelatin, mannitol, methylparaben sodium, propylparaben sodium, and strawberry flavor are the inactive ingredients.

Contraindications

Some patients should not take Zofran ODT, including those who are allergic to the medication or to any of its ingredients and those who are taking apomorphine.

Cautions

  • Before you are prescribed Zofran ODT, inform your doctor of:
    • All the medications you take, including prescription and nonprescription medications
    • Your allergies
    • Your current health problems
    • Your past medical history
    • Your pregnancy or breastfeeding status
  • Allergic reactions, including anaphylaxis and difficulty breathing, can occur with Zofran ODT use. Emergency care should be sought immediately if you have difficulty breathing, swelling of the tongue, lips, or face, a fast heart rate, a rash, or any other sign or symptom of an allergic reaction.
  • QT prolongation, an irregular heart rhythm, can occur with Zofran ODT use. Zofran ODT is not recommended in patients with congenital long QT syndrome. Patients with abnormal electrolyte levels, heart failure or arrhythmias, or patients who are taking other medications that can cause QT prolongation should be closely monitored.
  • Serotonin syndrome can occur with Zofran ODT use, especially if patients are also receiving other medications that can cause it. Mental status changes, blood pressure changes, rapid heart rate, dizziness, sweating, tremor, incoordination, seizures, nausea, vomiting, or diarrhea are some signs and symptoms of serotonin syndrome. Medical care should be sought immediately if you develop any of these effects.
  • Progressive ileus and/or gastric distension post abdominal surgery or chemotherapy-induced nausea and vomiting may be masked by Zofran ODT; therefore, patients need to be monitored for reduced bowel activity, especially those at risk for gastrointestinal obstruction.
  • Phenylalanine is found in Zofran ODT tablets.

Side Effects

Zofran ODT side effects include, but are not limited to, headache, tiredness, constipation, and diarrhea. Inform your doctor right away of any worrisome or persistent side effects.
