What is a Generic Drug?

A generic drug is a copy of the brand-name drug with the same dosage, safety, strength, quality, consumption method, performance, and intended use. Before generics become available on the market, the generic company must prove it has the same active ingredients as the brand-name drug and works in the same way and in the same amount of time in the body.

The only differences between generics and their brand-name counterparts is that generics are less expensive and may look slightly different (eg. different shape or color), as trademarks laws prevent a generic from looking exactly like the brand-name drug.

Generics are less expensive because generic manufacturers don't have to invest large sums of money to develop a drug. When the brand-name patent expires, generic companies can manufacture a copy of the brand-name and sell it at a substantial discount.

Description

Zovirax Ointment 5% (Acyclovir) is used to treat infections caused by the herpes virus. This ointment is applied directly to the skin and works by stopping the virus from making copies of itself, which helps prevent it from spreading. It is often used to treat conditions like cold sores and genital herpes. While Zovirax Ointment doesn’t cure these infections, it can help make symptoms less severe and shorten how long an outbreak lasts.

Directions

When using Zovirax Ointment 5%, it's important to follow the instructions given by your doctor. You should apply enough ointment to completely cover each sore. The typical Zovirax Ointment dosage is once every three hours, which adds up to six times a day, for a week. Always wash your hands before and after using the ointment to stop the infection from spreading. It's also important not to cover the treated area with bandages or waterproof wraps without instructions from your doctor.

While Zovirax Ointment can help relieve symptoms, it does not cure the virus or stop it from spreading to others. So, be careful and avoid close contact, like kissing, when you have sores.

Ingredients

The active ingredient in Zovirax Ointment is Acyclovir.

Contraindications

You should avoid using this medication if any of the following conditions apply:

  • Known hypersensitivity to Acyclovir or any other component present in the formulation.
  • Allergic reactions to valacyclovir, which is closely related to acyclovir.

Cautions

  • Before starting treatment with Zovirax, be sure to inform your healthcare provider if you have:
    • Any existing health conditions
    • Any allergies
    • A list of all medications you are currently taking
    • Whether you are pregnant or breastfeeding
  • Zovirax Ointment is meant for use on the skin only. Do not use it in your eyes or on other mucous membranes.
  • Use Zovirax exactly as directed, including the recommended dosage, frequency, and duration. Do not exceed the prescribed treatment length.
  • Zovirax Ointment is not used to prevent the spread of infection to others or to stop future outbreaks. It should only be used when symptoms of herpes simplex virus (HSV) are present.
  • While resistance to Zovirax Ointment is rare, it may occur. If your symptoms do not improve or worsen, consult your doctor.
  • There are no known drug interactions with Zovirax Ointment, even when used alongside other medications.
  • Zovirax Ointment is generally considered safe during pregnancy (Category B). However, consult your doctor before use to ensure the benefits outweigh any potential risks to the baby.
  • It is unclear if Zovirax applied to the skin passes into breast milk. However, if you have active herpetic lesions near or on your breast, avoid nursing to prevent transmission to your infant.
  • The safety and effectiveness of Zovirax Ointment have not been established for pediatric patients.
  • Older adults may respond similarly to younger patients when using Zovirax Ointment. Minimal absorption through the skin is expected.
  • Keep Zovirax Ointment stored as instructed and out of reach of children. Always wash your hands before and after applying the ointment to prevent spreading the infection.

Side Effects

In controlled clinical trials, mild pain such as transient burning or stinging was reported by approximately 30% of patients using Zovirax Ointment, with local itching (pruritus) occurring in about 4% of cases. Treatment discontinuation due to these side effects was rare. No significant differences in side effect rates were observed between patients using Zovirax and those using a placebo.

Post-market reports include rare cases of swelling, pain at the application site, and skin reactions like rash or persistent itching. These reactions are uncommon and may be related to the underlying condition being treated. Contact your healthcare provider if you experience severe discomfort, persistent irritation, or signs of an allergic reaction while using Zovirax.
