What is a Generic Drug?

Description

Zyclara (imiquimod) cream is for use on the skin for the treatment of palpable actinic keratoses of the face or balding scalp in adults. It is also used for the treatment of external genital and perianal warts/condyloma acuminata in patients 12 years of age and older.

Zyclara cream is available in a 2.5% pump or 3.75% packets and pump.

Directions

Zyclara should be used as instructed by your doctor. Any questions or concerns about the prescription may be referred to your doctor or pharmacist.

Recommended dosing for actinic keratosis: Apply Zyclara cream to the affected area of the skin one time a day for two weeks, then do not use any cream for two weeks.

Recommended dosing for external genital warts: Apply Zylcara cream to the external gentital/perianal warts one time a day until completely cleared up; duration of treatment can be up to 8 weeks.

Zyclara cream is for use on the skin only; it should not be used in the mouth, eyes, anus, or vagina.

Ingredients

Imiquimod is the active ingredient in Zyclara cream. Benzyl alcohol, cetyl alcohol, glycerin, isostearic acid, methylparaben, polysorbate 60, propylparaben, purified water, sorbitan monostearate, stearyl alcohol, white petrolatum, and xanthan gum are the inactive ingredients.

Contraindications

There are no contraindications, or reasons why a patient should not use Zyclara, per the most recent Prescribing Information.

Cautions

  • Before you start using Zyclara cream, inform your doctor of:
    • All the prescription and over-the-counter medications you use, including other medications used on the skin
    • Your allergies
    • Your current health conditions
    • Your past medical history
    • Your pregnancy or breastfeeding status
  • Severe local inflammatory reactions, including skin weeping and erosion, can occur; treatment interruption may be needed.
  • Severe vulvar swelling, which may result in urinary retention, can occur; treatment interruption may be needed or it may need to be stopped.
  • Flu-like signs and symptoms, including fatigue, nausea, fever, muscle pain, joint pain, and chills, can occur; treatment interruption may be needed.
  • Using Zyclara cream with other creams that contain imiquimod can increase the risk of side effects; therefore, the combination is not recommended.

Side Effects

Skin reactions, headache, pain and itching at the application site, irritation at the application site, fatigue, flu-like illness, and nausea are the most common Zyclara cream side effects. Other side effects may also occur. Immediately inform your doctor of any bothersome or persistent side effects.
