What is a Generic Drug?

Description

Zyprexa Zydis (olanzapine) is a prescription medication for the treatment of schizophrenia and bipolar I disorder.

Zyprexa Zydis comes in orally disintegrating tablets of 5 mg, 10 mg, 15 mg, and 20 mg strengths.

Directions

Zyprexa Zydis should be taken as directed by your doctor. Any questions or concerns regarding the medication may be referred to your doctor or pharmacist.

Your doctor will determine an appropriate Zyprexa Zydis dosage for you depending on your age and reason for taking the medication. The medication is typically taken by mouth one time a day.

Place Zyprexa Zydis in your mouth to dissolve.

Ingredients

Olanzapine is the active ingredient in Zyprexa Zydis. Gelatin, mannitol, aspartame, sodium methyl paraben, and sodium propyl paraben are the inactive ingredients.

Contraindications

There are no contraindications, or reasons why a person cannot take Zyprexa when taking it as monotherapy, per the Prescribing Information. However, the Contraindications section should be reviewed when taking Zyprexa in combination with fluoxetine (Symbyax®), lithium, or valproate.

Cautions

  • The following FDA Boxed Warning is associated with Zyprexa Zydis:
    • The risk of death is increased in elderly patients with dementia-related psychosis who are receiving antipsychotic medications. Zyprexa is not approved to treat patients with dementia-related psychosis.
    • The Boxed Warning section for Symbyax should be reviewed when taking Zyprexa and fluoxetine.
  • Before you begin treatment with Zyprexa Zydis, inform your doctor of:
    • All the medications you take
    • Your allergies
    • Your current health conditions
    • Your past medical history
    • Your pregnancy or breastfeeding status
  • Elderly patients with dementia-related psychosis who are receiving antipsychotics are at increased risk of cerebrovascular events such as stroke.
  • The potential for suicidal attempts are inherent in patients with schizophrenia and bipolar I disorder; therefore, high-risk patients should be monitored closely while they are being treated with Zyprexa Zydis. When taking Zyprexa with fluoxetine, the Boxed Warning and Warnings and Precautions sections should be reviewed.
  • Zyprexa Zydis may cause Neuroleptic Malignant Syndrome and Drug Reaction with Eosinophilia and Systemic Symptoms.
  • Zyprexa Zydis may cause high blood sugar, abnormal cholesterol or fat (lipid) levels, and weight gain.
  • Zyprexa Zydis may cause tardive dyskinesia. Zyprexa Zydis should be stopped if clinically appropriate.
  • Zyprexa Zydis can cause severe low blood pressure that may result in dizziness, abnormal heart rate, and fainting. Patients with cardiovascular disease, cerebrovascular disease, or any other condition that can affect blood pressure should use the medication with caution.
  • Zyprexa Zydis can cause abnormal white blood cell counts.
  • Zyprexa Zydis should be used with caution in patients with seizures or other conditions that increase the risk of seizures.
  • Avoid driving or operating machinery until you know how you tolerate Zyprexa Zydis. The medication can impact judgment, thinking, and motor skills.
  • Zyprexa Zydis should be used with caution in patients with urinary retention, prostatic hypertrophy, constipation, paralytic ileus, or other related conditions.
  • Zyprexa Zydis may increase prolactin levels.
  • Monitoring of fasting blood glucose and lipid levels should be completed before and during treatment.

Side Effects

Zyprexa Zydis side effects include, but are not limited to, low blood pressure, constipation, weight gain, dizziness, personality disorder, movement problems, sedation, headache, abdominal pain, pain in the extremities, fatigue, dry mouth, tremor, and weakness. Contact your doctor right away if you experience bothersome or persistent side effects.
